ya, my ring isn't 24

some white gold has nickel. depends on how it's made. some use another metal instead of nickel, i forgot what it is though.

sterling silver doesn't irrate me, nor does yellow gold

a large percentage of the white gold jewelry manufactured in the states have nickel in them. so the class ring people told me. it's what makes it look more gray than sterling silver. the white gold jewelry you can find in the asian markets (or places where they don't use nickel) are done with zinc and look a lot nicer in my opinion.

balfour guy told me today that i should go for the 18k and hope that it has little enough nickel to not bother me. the 18k is over $600 and i really dont want to spend that much on the possibility that it MIGHT not irritate me

ive come to terms with possibly not being able to get the officially licensed ring because it only comes in yellow and white gold (and yellow gold is ugly so no thank you)

anyone know any jewelers here that do tech rings in something like sterling silver or platinum?

QUOTE (lamont's lament @ Sep 28 2006, 09:44 AM)
is there any way to get it and avoid the ceremony? because i ordered mine yesterday and i told the lady i was going to be out of town that day, and she suggested that i just go to one of the other ceremonies (damn, who knew?).

i'm pretty sure you don't have to go to any of them...

i didnt get a ring in high school because i didnt see the point because i knew i wouldnt wear it past high school graduation. plus i wanted to save the money for a college ring because i felt that it meant more, as college was a choice that i consciously made and im damn proud that im graduating summa cum laude (barring any disasters) after 3.5 years.

im proud of my school. im proud of my accomplishments. i think i have earned the right to reward myself with something nice that has meaning to me even if others dont see it that way.

i dont like that its that expensive. im hoping to find a way so i dont have to spend that much money. unfortunately, my nickel allergy seems to be working against me, which is why ive given up on the official ring. i dont want to pay for the higher karat status unless i know for sure its a solution. even then id still prefer to go with something like sterling silver if i can find a jeweler who will do it because how much i spend will not make me prouder of where i am in life.

do you (eventually) want an engagement ring? i know you weren't one of the people a while back arguing that it should be $10k, but i doubt most women end up with $500 rings.

and my view is the same as KC. i'm proud as hell of getting myself (for the most part) through this place. and i was involved in a lot of crap with my college, so it's just something to remember it by. it's a great networking tool, too, especially in the industry where i'll be working.

and i want to punch somebody in the face and leave the double-t impression

KC, the men's 18karat is almost $900. that's why i went cheap and got the 10 with diamonds. this is just the "officially licensed" tech ring. you can get other styles that are still tech college rings.

yeah i didn't think any of my friends had gone before, so i just want to pick it up.

i'll probably call a week before the ceremony and see if i can get it.

yeah i want an engagement ring. as long as it looks nice and lasts a while, i dont care the price. I hate big rocks so something simple and cheap is fine.

i wasnt saying anything bad. i was honestly curious about why. she gave a very good answer. it wasnt WELL MOMMY AND DADDY SAID I COULD GET ONE AND ITS LIKE SUPER EXPENSIVE. so yeah, great job KC on your hard work and your accomplishments. Get your ring, girl!

yeah, and i think the gold quality has something to do with how the metal stands up. the 10k ring has a lot of copper in it, so it eventually loses the shiny factor and looks more like a penny.

plus you can't hang out with these people without a ring:

all i want is a texas tech ring in a metal that doesnt contain nickel

i hate yellow gold
18k white gold is still made up of 25% nickel
i would say platinum but i know its even more expensive, and like jessica said, its not worth dipping into my ira for or anything if i can find a more frugal alternative.

id prefer sterling silver because thats what my jewelry i have now is made out of and i have no reactions to it. however, ive yet to find a jeweler that can do the double t design (which is the point of the tech ring) in a sterling silver band.

i think there might be something you can coat the inside of the ring with that will keep the nickel from reacting with your skin. look into that if you cant find a jewler

yeah the lady at stuarts jewelers suggested painting it with nail polish. but why spend $$$$$ on something nice to then crap it up blink.gif

if i cant find what im looking for then i wont get anything. yes its something i really want but im not throwing that kind of money away without it being what i really want. it may sound picky and demanding, but its my money and my ring.

maybe i should save the money and just buy a puppy...
