say there's a guy, we'll call him durka. durka has been under the CIA spyglass for a while because of suspected terrorist activities. durka makes friends with a guy from syria named mustafa. such good friends that durka signs to be the absolute first person called if anything bad happens to mustafa. the CIA no doubt notices this, and probably flags mustafa to keep an eye on too. so now they notice mustafa goes home to syria to visit.

now, given these ties, how does it surprise you that we wouldn't want to allow mustafa into OUR country.

we're not talking about the coffee shop clerk that sells mustafa coffee every day and says hi, how are the canucks doing? we're talking about a fucking suspsected terrorist signing as the guy's first point of emergency contact.

Again, a SUSPECTED terrorist. And remember they were co-workers. I don't know about you, but when I was asked to provide an emergency contact I gave them the first person's number that came to mind, who just so happened to be a co-worker.

Secondly, mustafa didn't go home. He went to Tunisia.

But to address your example in more detail, if Mustafa was sent to Syria to be beaten and tortured when any idiot could have examined the situation in more detail and realized that he wasn't a terrorist, then it would be wrong to deport him.

No. In fact, the FBI and the RCMP admitted that there wasn't enough on Arar to make their case.

The RCMP’s third communication of note with American authorities during
Mr. Arar’s detention in NewYork actually involved two phone calls between
Corporal Rick Flewelling of CID and an FBI agent, the first on October 4 and
the second on October 5. During the second call, the FBI agent said that the
United States did not have enough information to charge Mr. Arar and was look-
ing to remove him. He indicated that Mr. Arar had asked to be sent to Canada,
and Washington wanted to know whether the RCMP could charge him or refuse
him entry to Canada. The corporal responded that there was not enough evi-
dence to charge Mr. Arar in Canada and that it was likely that he could not be
refused entry to Canada.

Yes. Primarily because I didn't have my cell phone on me at the time and couldn't remember my parent's number.
