QUOTE (Hartmann @ Sep 19 2006, 11:52 AM)
Thanks. I always a little confused about their view on salvation. I have a few Catholic friends and they are never able to give me a straight answer. The fact that they still have Jesus on the cross befuddles me as well.

Well it's not something that many Catholics are aware of. I don't think I learned about it until I was dating Ryan and wanted to learn how Lutherans are different from Catholics.

Functionally, for salvation, Catholics:
1) Get baptized
2) Go to confession regularly once they're age 7 or so

Catholics divide sin into two different types: venial (minor) and mortal (serious). Unconfessed mortal sins doom a person to hell. At confession, you are given a penance by the priest, which absolves the person of guilt. However, there still remains some temporal punishment for the sins which manifests as hardships on earth or time in Purgatory. The same goes for unconfessed venial sins. This punishment can be remitted, in whole or in part, by the performance of indulgences, which include good works, praying the rosary, reading scripture, etc. etc. Granting of indulgences in return for monetary contributions was what prompted Martin Luther to write his 95 theses, but I don't believe that the sale of indulgences is practiced anymore.

She can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the differences (other than the whole Papal thing) it's basically, Lutheran's believe in faith alone whereas Catholics believe in Faith and Goodwork.

Her thoughts on this is it really doesn't matter. If you have faith, then you will be driven to do goodworks anyway.

Salvation by faith alone (Lutheran) vs. faith + works (Catholics). Lutherans also follow Sola Scriptura (scripture alone), but I don't think they rail against tradition as much as other Protestant denominations do.

Yep, Jim had my opinion right. I think the faith alone vs. faith & works argument is moot.

Again, you're thinking of the difference between Catholicism and Protestantism. Besides, I'm sure some Protestants sex up little boys too. tongue.gif
