I don't like bittorrent much because it ganks all of my bandwidth. Other than that, it's a fairly decent service.

it has no built in searching capabilities, you have to go to different websites to search for shit, and then those websites get shut down every other month... also all files people are willing to share aren't listed in one global database somewhere, it's all broken into what different websites have to offer so you can't find shit, it's fucking gay

bittorrent is a wannabe file sharing program, half-assed shit

It's no different than searching on a p2p network... you type what you're searching for and it brings it up for you... It's the same concept, you just aren't using a built in search engine throught out the network.

but the content each website you search on is different, in a peer to peer network all users' content is indexed for you to find, even in a pure peer to peer network like gnutella, in bittorrent all the content is broken up and dispersed among bittorrent websites.... that equals mega-gayness

bittorrent is just a protocol to transfer files, like ftp or tcp, it's not a true peer to peer network like everyone keeps confusing it as... now if some file sharing program software used the bittorrent protocol to transfer files over it's peer to peer network that would be fine and dandy, but until bittorrent is made into a true peer to peer network filesharing program it will continue to suck donkey balls

No it isn't P2P and it's creator has never claimed it to be that type of network. It's distributed networking. Not having global database was the point...

For someone who is so freakin' paranoid it's really weird for you to say you want a central repository.

i don't want a central repository, which is why i like gnutella

all bittorrent does is break apart files and send them to you from many different sources, and it doesn't even use it's own protocol for file transfer, it uses ftp or http

i could make a webpage with a huge list of shit and people can click the hyperlinks to download the stuff, that's basically what bittorrent is except it sends you the file chunks from different sources

bittorrent is way over rated

No, BitTorrent works perfectly for what it was originally created for, the sharing of source code.

People have tried to mutate to share other things, and if you find the right torrent with the right seeds then you can theoretically download entire movies in minutes. The problem is the theoretical part. Bram Cohen has said multiple times before that bandwidth has to scale before BitTorrent can scale.

it does use it's own protocol. http://www.bittorrent.com/protocol.html

most torrent sites now have the same stuff.

mininova is really the only one you ever need anyways.

scene releases hit mininova literally minutes after they hit the topsites, and unless you have the kinda connections that are gonna get you leech access on a topsite, or you feel like waiting in queue for days in IRC, it's gonna be the quickest way to get new releases

mininova's tv section typically has all the hot shows no more than 30 minutes after they air (thank you eztv)

speeds with bit torrent far surpass any other p2p client/network, especially with proper NAT transversal

stop using the official bit torrent client and use azereus. the official client sucks fucking balls, azereus is open-source and allows for plugins, and is configureable as fuck.

bit torrent doesn't just send you file chunks, it prioritizes the chunks sent and recieved by the availability, making the entire process a bazillion times more efficent than something like gnutella (which does the same thing, but without the prioritization process. you get part a, then part b, etc.)

the trackers only list what content is available, just like a search function in gnutella lists only what content is available. none of the file comes from the tracker (unless it's a web seed, which is rare).

face it, bit torrent is the most practical and most widely accepted p2p protocol EVER, and there's a damn good reason for it. embrace the change, unless you have root on a topsite. if that's the case, you wouldn't be asking for knight school. tongue.gif
