A lot of states have joined in and now have $7+ minimum so the theory of competing for workers against neighboring states with higher wages i never really felt was that big of an issue and even less now. so the mostly unskilled labor market isnt going anywhere (it never was) and if anything the demand for these jobs are even higher.
cost of living in california is higher but not ridiculous like people have been lead to believe -------------------- Little monkeys making money

ive checked on renting there when i was going to rent/buy an apartment. not bad considering salaries are higher and now minimum wage is. id be renting there for 200 extra a month which would be doable

I happen to live in California, and rents are generally way way way way higher than any place in Texas. In my area the average price for a studio/efficiency is about 1000 per month, 1200-1400 for a 1 bedroom apartment. If someone had told me this a few years before I came here, I probably wouldn't have believed them. I mean, where I'm from in Houston, you can get a pretty nice house and pay less per month on a mortgage. Anyway, it knocks people's budgets way out of whack, especially for those who don't make much. It's not unusual to hear of people out here just scraping by who spend between half and 2/3 (or more!) of their disposable income on rent alone. Rents are astronomical and it's a huge challenge for people to make it on even the state's elevated minimum wage. So, I'd say this is good for California but not necessarily for other states where this housing price level isn't the norm.

you live in the bay area? because i found a nice house right in LA that id be renting with 2 roomates (like i have now) for just 150 more a month

if you check out the different cities, you can choose just about anywhere you want. and even not factoring those cities in, the cost of almost everything non-housing related was at least 10-50% higher than plano.
and where did your mom move in plano? because about half of that city is similar to most of lubbock, and the other half looks like it's too nice to belong in texas. (my parents bought a house in west plano in 2002, and the taxes really are ridiculous. my dad said he's paying about 7x more in property taxes per year in plano than he ever did when we lived in a suburb of denver, which is like comparing a bum's asshole to a very attractive disease-free female's.) |
