I am thinking about getting a portable external harddrive. Does anyone have any experience with these? If you don't know what I am talking about they are those 2.5" external 5400 RPM harddrives that use USB for power.

Yeah, I need one so that I don't have to lug around a heavy 3.5" one, it's power supply, and cable... ugh... I think I'm going to go with the Seagate 120GB. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

several of us at high tech have them and like them. ive sold them to people after floppies, cd-rs and flash drives have all crashed on them and the portables seem to work well. never heard of any problems, but with any hardware im sure its possible.
the thing is, unless you are trying to fit it into a confined space, like in a bag with your laptop, then all externals are portable in the sense that you can pick them up and go like a flash drive. if you are just using it for personal use say at home and size isnt a key issue, go with the ones that arent labeled portable - theyll be cheaper than their more compact counterparts, but they still do exactly what you need them to. -------------------- Forget regret

The portability is definitely what I need. Something I can grab from my bag, plug-in, and use for work while sitting in an airport waiting on a delayed flight. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

well like i said theyre all "portable"
id suggest going by high tech to look at the ones they have. i know doug is there, and jared, and will is the manager if you want to speak to someone in particular. you can check out the size difference (really not that much compared to how much money you save) and then of course they have the educational discount pricing, so that might help your decision too. -------------------- Forget regret

Oh. I don't go to Tech anymore... I have 200GB external and it's just a pain in the butt to take anywhere. It has its own power supply, big long cables, etc. whereas these caviar drives don't have that and can be held in a laptop bag. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

the portable ones with own power supply through usb are the best things ever made. i bought this acomdata 40 gig one for about 80 dollars after mail in rebate. not a single problem with it whatsoever. and i use it with my laptop to transfer files from work/school/home. so i can pretty much guess the seagate ones arent gonna be a problem at all.
