I have a hard time understanding how guys are getting killed in M1A2 tanks by IEDs. The only way it seems that this is possible is they were either sitting outside the armor or the fuel tank was hit and fire spread through the tank. The first seems more plausible. Just confuses me...

haven't even heard about this...do you have a link to an article where it says m1 abrams?

I have a buddy there right now in EOD and goes out on IED calls daily (duh). he's a master sgt so he kinda knows wtf he's talking about. I'll ask him what the dealio is.

seems implausible though, upon first hearing about it.

got word that a triple stacked 155mm IED hit a tank killing several crewman.

many others are killed by a single 155mm ripping the treads off, then the crew 'unbottons' to fight back and get hit with snipers.

QUOTE (wikipedia)
On November 27, 2004 an Abrams tank was badly damaged and its driver killed from shrapnel wounds when an extremely powerful improvised explosive device (IED) consisting of three M109A6 155 mm shells with a total explosive weight of 34.5 kg detonated next to the tank. The other three crew members were able to escape, a testament to the armor of the M1A2.

seems only 1 reported death?

There was one just last month: http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/2006/n...0608-13201.html

Sorry for not replying sooner but I was a little busy (IEDs = 0/BombBoy =3).  But yeah, there have been catastrophics on tanks in the past.  Haven't heard of any recently and it depends on a person's definition of catastrophic: tank burned up, crew got out; tank disabled, etc......  The one thing I do know is that patterns will get you killed no matter what you roll in over here.

When he says "patterns" does he mean patterned blasts, as in the lay out of the IED?

no he means routes...times...the badguys being able to lay out a trap for you. apparently he says people (both contractors and the mil) are getting lazy or complacent and taking the same routes every time.

I'm awaiting a more specific answer on types of IEDs. I know they are stacking several arty rounds, but am curious as to if they are making shape charges for armor too.

I heard they were making cone shaped charges to funnel the blast in a more concentrated area.

Jon made an inquisitive statement as to whether or not they were making shaped IEDS.

I replied that yes, they are making shaped IEDs...cone-shaped IEDs.

You're a bored guy I suppose. Silly internetz.

what in the hell? I'm pretty familiar with making shape charges for door knocking. google misznay-schardin effect for the theory behind them.

my inquiry was a thinking aloud one...I wonder if they are using big ass shape charges for armor. I know they have them for regular IEDs. I'm talking about big honkin ones that would gnarl a tank.

now everybody hug!

Well then, if that's the case, wouldn't shaping them like a cone dampen the effect? I would think you would want a nice parabolic shape with the focus of the parabola dead on the tank?
