I went to a Kroger store here in a Dallas suburb to pick up a few items I was running low on. I expected to be in and out in less than 10 minutes; however, that's not what happened.
As I pushed my cart up to the front to checkout I noticed that there were only self-checkout machines. I figured no problem... I'll just check myself out and be on my way. I scanned some lima beans, broccoli, and peas and put them in a sack. Then I put my sack in my cart. The machine kept complaining and telling me to put my vegetables back in the sack even though I already sacked them and put them in my cart. The same thing continued to happen with my eggs, chicken breasts, and water. I would sack my items how I liked, but the machine quit working whenever I put the sack in the cart. After having to get help several times from an employee who came over and unsacked my goods and put them back on the scale I was fed up and asked for a manager. I told the manager that it shouldn't be this hard to check out items and that I'm taking my business to Albertson's. I left Kroger and went to Albertson's. I've used self-checkout machines before at Walmart and other grocery stores and never had this problem before. I will never shop at a Kroger again. |

I don't generally have trouble with self-checkout machines themselves... what drives me nuts is when people decide to use self-checkout even when they have a FULL cart of crap.

well the biggest problem i've seen with them is the bagging process. those damn scales are always off it seems

You've got to be smarter than the machine. If you want to get back at them, you could do what I've done on several occassions.
Get the biggest block of Parmigiano-Reggiano you can find. Usually they run about $16-$22/pound. Take it and put it on the scale, and ring it up as bananas. -------------------- Beers that I have had, updated July 5th, 2009: 1,548

The store and regional managers called me and we've also been communicating via e-mail. So far they've been extremely helpful and anxious to rectify the situation.
Supposedly they're going to be replacing the u-scans with updated models in July, and they're going to investigate why no one was around to check me out that night. |
