I didn't read the article carefully enough, but does anyone know if that applies to graduate students? While I'm done with math grad, I still have to take courses for certification if I decide to teach.

What was the flat rate for the summer? I might want to take 8 hours of physics, but not sure on that just yet.

im somewhat opposed to it, if it was that case when i first came to tech, i would have no problem, but I will only be taking 12 rhs from now on, and i am going to get fucked over.

if it goes through, they should give the option of if you have been here if you want to continue what you are doing, or go to the flat rate plan. the people that are just coming now then would have no choice

They should have set the flat rate at 12 or 13hours, not 15. Many other universities have it at 12-13 hours with no problems...Tech is just greedy.

Do you not see how the university of tech's size would quickly run out of money if they set it at 12?

With the number of college students interested and qualified of attending institutions of higher learning growing as it is, in 2010 there would need to be at least 10 "flagship sized" (45-50k+ undergrads) universities in Texas alone to meet the demand.

To help try to minimize the stress, universities are starting to adopt the flat-rate tuition plan not only as a way to make more money to expand the universities facilities (a lot more people are taking less than 15 hours/semester these days as opposed to 10/20/30 years ago), but also try and give students incentive to take more hours and thus graduate a little bit earlier.

As a jr. EE student, 18 hour/semesters arent very practical, but i still understand why flat-rate tuition is being adopted across the state.

The University of New Mexico has 26,399 people and they aren't going belly up with a flat tuition rate for 12-18 hours. How many people does Tech have?

yeah, the only advantage to incoming students in engineering is that they can sign up for 18 hrs and then drop their least favorite class and it wont hurt them

but that is the only advantage i can see

I doubt tech is going "belly up", they simply need more money to accomodate (expand facilities, buy a bunch of new high tech shit, higher more profs/TA's) the projected undergraduate growth rate.

New Mexico simply isn't in the same position as Texas universities.

if they actually hire more professors, instead of giving the same workload w/ less pay to grad students or adjunct professorships, then awesome. Just sucks that this has to happen during my last semester at Tech.

aye, it kinda sounds like a charity case at that point...paying for resources you probably wont use, but welcome to collective action.

i liked schwabs idea where they just amend the book 1 year and all incoming students have to adhere to it and as a current student you can choose which book you follow.

unfortunately, no one had the foresight to do that earlier.

totally agree
what a load a shit - it will totally discourage people who cant' afford that much money, who only take a couple hours a semester because they have jobs or kids or whatever. It's stupid stupid stupid. Plus, if it applies to grad students, we are already getting fucked already - we don't need to get over more.

I don't think it affects part-time students -- only full-timers. Per-hour rate up to 11, then 15-hr rate for 12-18.

Well I read the Toreador article about the flat-rate tuition plan and concluded that it was an atrocious article, to say the least. From what I know about flat-rate tuition plans, though, it should 1) only apply to full-time students (12+ hours) and 2) only apply to undergraduate students. But this is Tech -- who fucking knows what they'll do.
