Pretty cool stuff. Wonder if they're working on vaccines for any other type of cancer?

Bit of a misnomer... it's not a vaccine for cancer. It's a vaccine for the strains 16 and 18 of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which cause about 70% of cervical cancer. Other strains cause the remaining 30%. The same strains also cause anal cancer.

Other strains of HPV cause common warts, genital warts, and various other conditions. Looking at the article again, it looks like it's also effective against the two strains of HPV (dunno which #'s) that cause 90% of genital warts.

HPV is one of the most common stds, beause the virus is soo small it goes through condoms like nothing. Glad to hear that this is progressing and hope other gene therapy comes along.

In most men it doesn't do much, but gives women cervical cancer like nothing else.

Well yes. Regardless, it's something and I would venture to say the numbers are higher...but whatever. I am happy no matter what since it will help people....

Nah, both Wikipedia and the articles I've read about this vaccine state the 70% & 90%.

Well, in nursing school and on our board exams it varies--just a comment. Regardless, it's great.

Ah ok. Well different studies show different things. In any case, maybe this will be a lead-in for vaccines that cover more (or all?) strains of HPV. I know that I have one of the cutaneous strains of HPV, because I've gotten occasional warts (mainly plantar warts), but that's far different from the stains covered by this vaccine.
