I thought I would ping you guys for your personal or professional opinions on laptops. I figured the people on this forum are a bit more hip to this stuff than the mil or contractor boards.

I need one...asap. I don't need one of those indestructible powebooks or whatever they are called. I don't plan on throwing in a big pile of sand and shit.

needs to have good battery life, powerful enough to play some movies/games/wifi/etc.

although they may all have that capability now.

the last time I purchased one was in 97...so I am totally out of the loop. I'm sure I could just go to bestbuy and get one, but when throwing down more than a grand the last thing i want is buyer's remorse...you know?

I am not against getting a mac either. I have no platform loyalty...I just want to be sure that it's compatible with the formats used for gaming...because all work and no play makes jon a sad boy.

help please.

ideally around 1500

though I would go up to 2500, no higher (I need to save some $$ so I can go surfing soon and not have to camp and get assraped by filthy mexicans).

plus it's not like I'm fuckin splitting atoms wiht the notebook...mainly movies, games, interweb, photos, etc...I just dont want it to bog down or crash. I've gotten too used to my desktop to put up with slow shit.

depends on what kinda games you want to play, but i'd say $1500 gets you a pretty damn nice notebook nowadays. if you want to play the latest 3d games you'd prob have to spend more, but you have a pretty nice price range there.

i don't know much about the notebook market right now, but my biggest advice for people buying notebooks has always been get as big of a screen as you can afford.

thanks for the input. I figured that most notebooks today would be a bit better than the POS I have from 97.

at this point that thing is nothing more than a library of my written works and coursework.

and plays a mean game of solitaire...

yeah 1500 will get you a damn good laptop nowadays

dell has some pretty good deals/offers going on this week: http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopi...en&s=dhs&~tab=2

only bad thing about dell is that you can't get an amd chip, which is cheaper and faster than intels

i actually found a nice HP at frys the other day... (yeah it surprised me too).

After having a bunch of dells and toshibas pass through my hands, i'd have to say go with toshiba over dell. aside from that, get what you want, and buy the best screen resolution possible. the LCD is the one thing you can't upgrade no matter what. (yes, some laptops have upgradeable mobos/cpus now, but whatev.) It's also the most expensive part of the laptop. so yeah. that.

I really do appreciate you guy's input...

I was wondering...can you play games on macs? I ask because I see where a game comes out and it's xbox, ps2, pc...but it never says macs.

I'm an idiot.

Yeah, there are plenty of games available on the Mac. The problem is getting your hands on them.

Of course you could buy one of the new intel macs and run windows too.

the only problem with getting a macbook/pro is that they still only come with one button, so if you're bootcamping to XP, you'll have to install a hack or something of the sort (or use an external mouse) to right click.

the hack isn't hard to find, and there's also some people that set up the motion sensor to right click. (they "tap" the computer next to but not actually on the mouse button, and it senses it)
