I can't believe nobody posted anything before now. This was not only the front headlines on CNN.com but also on the international news! I was like whoa, that's where I lived and went to school!

why would you have to steal a baby....there are enough up for adoption that it would be a lot easier just to do that than fucking steal a baby from someone that wants it

The people who steal babies are generally fucked up in the head and/or have fucked up home situations and thus wouldn't qualify for adoption. Sometimes it's women who pretend to be pregnant ('cause hubby wants a kid) and then steal a kid around the time of their "due date".

Lubbock woman said she'd given birth days before baby's abduction

By BETSY BLANEY
Associated Press

LUBBOCK -- An acquaintance of the woman accused of kidnapping an infant after earlier posing as a nurse said she was skeptical when the woman claimed to have just given birth.

Kloma Clark, manager of the mobile home park where 33-year-old Stephanie Jones resides, said Jones told her Friday that she was a new mother.

"I told her point blank, 'You don't look like you just had a baby,'" Clark said. "I should have been suspicious, but I wasn't. I guess I trust everybody."

Jones was arraigned Tuesday on charges of kidnapping and abandoning a child, one day after Priscilla Nicole Maldonado was found in a car seat beneath a condominium carport in 104-degree heat.

The baby was reunited with her mother, Erica Ysasaga, late Monday night. Ysasaga said the girl's hair had been cut, possibly to pass Priscilla off as a boy.

Jones is accused of taking the infant from the distracted mother at Ysasaga's home Sunday. She is being held in the Lubbock County Jail on $150,000 bond.

Her attorney, Jack Stoffregen, declined comment but said he had met with Jones and planned to meet with members of her family. No one answered the door at the Jones home on Tuesday.

The baby, who turned a week old today, remained in stable condition, University Medical Center spokesman Greg Bruce said. She was born with jaundice, a common complication in newborns that causes a yellowing of the skin because of a buildup of pigment in the blood. The condition is easily treatable, and it doesn't appear she suffered any other medical problems by being left in the heat, Bruce said.

Ysasaga's family said Jones befriended them in the hospital, helping with the baby while dressed in medical scrubs and later getting their address by saying she wanted to deliver a swing and some baby clothes.

Jones used the name Lisa Stewart and gave her fake driver's license and Social Security numbers to gain her trust, police said. Ysasaga said Jones showed up Sunday and took the infant while Ysasaga was distracted by her 2-year-old son. Police won't speculate on a motive.

Police said Jones led investigators to the baby on Monday after a tip prompted them to question her possible role in the abduction. The baby had been left alone under the carport for 30 to 45 minutes.

"It appears that (Jones) was driving around in a quandary about what to do with this baby," Lubbock police Lt. Roy Bassett told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. "She's the only one who can answer, really, why she chose to leave Priscilla where she left her."

Clark said Jones had told her Friday about her new baby.

"I said, 'I didn't even know you were pregnant.' She said it was a small baby," Clark said of her conversation with Jones.

The Joneses were "quiet people," Clark said, adding, "Stephanie was a very kind person, I thought."

Bassett said investigators don't plan to file charges against Jones' husband, Scott Jones.

"It appears he was as surprised as anyone to find himself in the middle of this," Bassett said.
