shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

and i never heard yon being used as 4

for the number 4 itself, shi is gonna be the most common. but in a non traditional style, yon is accepted.

taking the number structure:
1: ichi
2: ni
3: san
4: shi/yon

10: jyu
11: jyu-ichi (10-1)
12: jyu-ni (10-2)
13: jyu-san (10-3)
14: jyu-yon (10-4)

24: nijyu-yon (2-10-4)
34: sanjyu-yon (3-10-4)
40: yon-jyu (4-10)

etc...

shi is traditional as i came form the chinese numbering system

things like april (4th month) is used with shi: shi-gatsu

i'm sure there's some kind of rule when to use it...i just can't remember what it is

Oh crap, is it jyu or juu? laugh.gif I've been seeing it as juu, and it's a bit weird to try and pronounce the u twice as long every time I want to say a number.

i've seen it as both...

not sure if there's an "official" way

i learned it as jyu. i think it has more to do with the pronunciation of it.

I think that might be like an accent. Sort of like words that end in su

It's more common for female so pronounce the u in su, and for males the u is usually dropped. (there are some exceptions...like when your telling the person to use su like..in spelling, since it's a part of the alphabet) but in general context, men don't usually use the u in su.

Ah, that makes sense. Another thing about dropping sounds though. I noticed that when I hear native speakers, both male and female saying "dozo yoroshiku", they never seem to pronounce the u blink.gif It sort of ends up sounding like *dozo yorosh-k* with a hard k sound at the end. Dialect? Accent? Or are there just various acceptable ways (traditional/modern/casual/polite) to say things?

just because it has 2 u's doesnt mean you probably pronounce it twice as long.

romanizations of asian languages are going to be different, depending on books and all that stuff. i'm sure juu and jyu are pronounced the same, its just a different way to spell it. at least, thats my experience with asian languages.
