So I've gotten into the habit of eating both a starchy and fibrous carbohydrate with each meal.

On the Internet you can rarely find a list of starchy/fibrous vegetables and when you do the lists usually conflict.

Are carrots, peas, and squash starchy or fibrous? Those are my three main questions.

If anyone has a reliable list of starchy and fibrous vegetables that would also help.

haha, peas are starchy i think now

the rule i had heard was that green veggies were normally full of fiber and that most things grown under the ground were full of carbohydrates

Just looking up some nutrition values...

1 c carrot: 3.7 g fiber, 0.7 g starch
1 c peas: 9 g fiber, 7 g starch
1 c summer squash: 2.5 g fiber, 1.5 g starch
1 c winter squash: 5.7 g fiber, 8 g starch

In short, carrots, peas, and summer squash are more fibrous, winter squash is more starchy.

Fiber is a carb.

it pays to have a research person on the forums

p.s. what website did you use to look up the nutrition values?

this is the answer i got from a personal trainer/fitniss guru:

QUOTE
Some people consider peas, carrots and squash starchy, but because they are
so low in calories, like all veggies, I wouldn't consider them starchy. I
consider all veggies fibrous and they're perfect for those wanting to lose
weight because 1.) they are very low in calories, yet high in fiber so are
quite filling, 2.) are loaded with vitamins and minerals and other very
beneficial nutrients, and 3.) have almost NO adverse affects on blood sugar
levels like many other carbs do.

The best starchy carbs are those that are natural and not processed
(man-made), such as:
Oatmeal
Yam
Brown rice
Potato
Sweet Potato
Beans
Lentils

I hope this helps and that we have the opportunity to help you with our
program.

Hi lance

technically (if you want to split hairs)
they are starchy carbs, if you go
by the textbook definition.

however, they ARE vegetables
and its easier for simplicity to
lump vegetables into the fibrous
category becuase I would throw in
carrots or peas into the same
category as broccoli, asparagus
salad veggies and so in in
terms of nutritional value, low calorie
density and effect on body composision

when youre eating nutrient dense,
low calorie density natural veggies
you are always on the right track

one possible exception is corn, which
should definitely be put in the starchy
carb category -- it is much higher
in calories.. still natural, but definitely
in starchy carb category by definition
of the bffm program

have a great week and let me know how
else I can help

tom
