the problem is you can't call these things simply "gaming consoles" anymore. they're more powerful than most people's PCs and can do a lot more than just play games.
look at all the insane hardware in the xbox 360. the 3d gfx chips in it were specially developed by ATI with expressed consent from microsoft (who provided all the R&D money) that they would be allowed to make PC gfx cards using the new chip designs. a gfx card alone w/the kind of graphics rendering power the 360 has isn't even available yet (although pretty soon from ATI i'm sure), and even if it was, the card itself would cost more than a full fledged xbox 360 setup. i'm not saying an xbox 360 or ps3 or wii (haha name) can replace your PC, but for gaming and playing music and i'm guessing light internet browsing, what you get for the price can't be beat. |

"power" and "graphics power" are two very different things. they are NOT more powerful than most people's pc's. And I don't know what the fuck you're talking about, but there's already an entire market of cards that eclipse the 360's power. There's a reason a bunch of fanboys call it the XboX 1.5. It's not even top-of-the-line by PC gaming standards. And I don't know where you're getting these fucking figures, the PC market was ahead of the 360 before the 360 even launched. The wii has already been confirmed to be ALMOST on par with the 360. It's nothing spectacular, it's about the games Can you do what you'll be able to do on the wii on the pc? Lemme know when you can swordfight, fish, play the drums, shoot like a real gun, etc. on your Dell there. Consoles will always exist in a completely separate market than PC's. Yes, eventually the prices will be the same, but it's the concept of having it all there in that one tiny box, the promise of it being guaranteed to run on standard hardware (okay, they're SUPPOSED to. there's some shitty ones out there), and the overall convienece that makes it a packaged deal. Yes, the PC will start borrowing more and more from the console market, and the console market will ALWAYS draw more and more from the PC market, but they will always exist separately. (at least until VR is cheap enough. Once holodecks are cheaper than dating, the future of the human race is doomed) -------------------- WAIT. I'm not finished.

QUOTE (zetec @ May 10 2006, 12:19 PM) "power" and "graphics power" are two very different things. they are NOT more powerful than most people's pc's. So most people's PCs have three 3.2GHz cores and 512MB DDR3, 1TFLOP of floating point performance, 21.6 GB/s front side bus, 22.4 GB/s memory bandwidth, and graphics cards with 48 billion shader ops/s & 16 billion pixel/s fillrate? QUOTE (zetec @ May 10 2006, 12:19 PM) And I don't know what the fuck you're talking about, but there's already an entire market of cards that eclipse the 360's power. really? which ones? and how much do they cost? QUOTE (zetec @ May 10 2006, 12:19 PM) There's a reason a bunch of fanboys call it the XboX 1.5. It's not even top-of-the-line by PC gaming standards. save for a PC having more memory and typically a bigger hard drive (which a gaming console doesn't have much use for), how is it not top of the line? which PC is better (for gaming performance) and why? QUOTE (zetec @ May 10 2006, 12:19 PM) And I don't know where you're getting these fucking figures XBox 360 specs GeForce 7900 specs ATI X1900 specs (remarkably similar to the xbox 360s, because it came out after the 360 and ATI was allowed to develop the 360's gfx chip into their own gfx cards QUOTE (zetec @ May 10 2006, 12:19 PM) it's about the games Can you do what you'll be able to do on the wii on the pc? QUOTE (zetec @ May 10 2006, 12:19 PM) Consoles will always exist in a completely separate market than PC's. who said they wouldn't? I just said you can't treat them as a simple gaming console therefore can't expect them to all cost $200 when they're released anymore, especially when they have the same gaming power as PCs 3x the cost. i've been up to long to bother refuting most of that post, i'm about to crash, but i thought i'd mention there IS some crazy online pc biker thingie where you actually have a stationary bike, and you can race other rich people online in virtual recreations of san francisco and the tour de france or whatever.
fun stuff. i might address the other stuff later. -------------------- WAIT. I'm not finished.

This is ridiculous:
QUOTE The more expensive system will include a 2.5" 60GB hard drive, 4 USB 2.0 ports, a memory card reader, built-in 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, support for HD displays up to 1080i and 1080p, one HDMI output, AV output, and digital optical output. That's a nice bundle. In contrast the cheaper system has a 20GB hard drive, loses the memory card reader, the WiFi support, and here's the biggie, the HDMI output. So if you're planning to rely on the PS3 to play Blu-ray movies, you may not have the experience you hoped for due to the lack of a protected output path on the lower-end model. Right now, the only two studios that have made a decision on the use of the Image Constraint Token on the next-gen optical formats have decided against using it for now. That may change, and there is no guarantee that all the movies you try watching on the cheaper PS3 won't be downsampled. http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060509-6781.html They gutted the lower-cost system. Why? To make people have to purchase the higher cost one to get what should have been a full system? I mean... just... wtf... Well done Sony. Well done, indeed. Also, Final Fantasy's boring, Metal Gear Solid got old. GTA still rocks my ass off, though =o Edit: Surprisingly, Slashdot actually sums it up fairly well: http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=0...314245&from=rss http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=0...149215&from=rss Timbo -------------------- ![]() |

there was an article in a comp magazine i read saying that when people heard about the $600-700 price the top sony execs dismissed it asap with a corporate backtrack something like "well we meant that the system is easily worth $600-700..

so far reports are that DS's controller isnt as good as they showed. unfortunate. expect the "next gen" consoles to make better utilization, oh well. at least they get a dragon warrior game on release.
xbox should be pushing 120? titles by christmas. optimistic. id say 80 is probly a safer number but we'll see. btw lumines will be on live arcade, so there goes the only reason to buy a psp. the vista/live arcade connection might be interesting but i wouldnt expect anything mind blowing yet. this is still early on in this stage of gaming. and ps3's low end system wont even have hd-out capabilities. laughable. sony fucked up big on their consoles. their saving grace is "japanese games made by japanese", but with the cost of making games increasing so much you wont be seeing as many console specific games. even gran turismo will release on 360 the same date its on ps3, and if im not mistaken i believe gta will be on 360 first ? rev will drop at $250, xbox360(w/ hd et all) will be around $350 when ps3 hits, and ps3 will have limited supply and much higher cost. whats interesting is the 360 has been finally meeting/passing demands in supply so that stores can carry stock of them(couldnt find a 360 w/ hd in lubbock for a month). thisll be interesting, especially knowing itll all basically go down around black friday. |

I've never done this before, but I'll be camping in line for a launch day wii.
I must have a wii in my hands as soon as possible. I can't get enough wii. Wii will be the best thing that has ever come. When wii comes, it will be glorious. I like how everything that comes out of wii is white. Something tells me I won't be able to stop touching my wii. (I have to wonder if that will ever get old. I'm thinking.... no.) -------------------- WAIT. I'm not finished.
