My brother spilled beer on his laptop last night and now the shift, even though the keys feel normal, is permanently on. The arrow keys also do not work. Obviously this wouldn't be covered by the service plan he has on it or the manufacturer's warranty since it was liquid being spilled. Does anybody know how to clean the keyboard? He said he has a shitload of papers due in the next couple of weeks, so he needs to get it fixed.

That sucks ... normally what I do on regular keyboard is spray them out with the shower head and let them dry for a few days but I guess you can't do that with a laptop. I would recommend going to Radio Shack and getting some electronic contact cleaner. They have two kinds, one lubricates (leaves a residue) and the other doesn't. I would try the one that doesn't first and see if it eats the grime outta there and unsticks the keys, if that doesn't work maybe try the one that lubricates too. The thing you gotta do is use this stuff sparingly, you don't wanna just go dousing the thing in it, and you also wanna tip it upside down for a little bit and make sure it's all dry before you turn it on ...but you shouldn't have to turn the laptop on till the keys are unstuck anyways so that shouldn't be a problem. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

take off those keys, buy a keyboard to hook up to the laptop, and type with that. Thats the easiest way.

I already tried hooking up a USB keyboard and using that but because the actual keys aren't stuck down, just beer is making the contacts think they are, then the shift key is still stuck and if I turn on the Caps lock the number keys still don't work. I thought about what dogmeat said, getting some kind of alcohol based cleaner. I didn't really mess with it that much, but he tried playing with the keys and didn't get any off and called Toshiba and they wouldn't tell him out to take them off or clean it.

you used to work at best buy. take it up there when cody or someone you know is working and see if they can tell you how to get the keys off

It's not impossible, but it would be easier to use a warranty to ship it back for them to replace the keyboard, or ship it back and pay the $35-or-so to replace it if it's out of warranty. I suppose you could go ahead and try that way, however, if you plan on sending it back in case it doesn't work. Might want to verify your warranty info first though. -------------------- WAIT. Laptops are such a pain in the ass to work on it's not even funny. I had to take my old Compaq from 1999 apart three separate times, and it took me HOURS to get it all done and dear god you gotta be careful because that shit is easy to break.
I am seriously amazed at the manufacturing technology used to make laptops and complex mechanical/electronic devices as such ... -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!
