QUOTE (impala454 @ Apr 13 2006, 09:45 AM) hmm... maybe i missed something but i didn't realize plants could live in a vacuum I didnt know the moon was a vacuum? I mean, I dont know much about astronomy but isnt a vacuum where there is a complete absence of air. There is air on the moon.... and gravity. Just not much of it. |

QUOTE (impala454 @ Apr 13 2006, 01:18 PM) there's no air on the moon nevermind. apparently scientists think there are liquids but no air. This post has been edited by Jessica: Apr 13 2006, 12:50 PM |

QUOTE (Jessica @ Apr 13 2006, 12:48 PM) are you sure about that? or are you saying there is no oxygen on the moon? air doesnt equal oxygen. Im pretty sure there is air on the moon. No, Impala was correct. The moon is too small (too little gravity) for it to hold an atmosphere. There *is*, however, a small carbon dioxide-based atmosphere on Mars. -------------------- |

There is no oxygen in the moon's atmosphere but there are other gases. The total atmosphere on the moon though is very small compared to the Earth's atmosphere.
QUOTE This is also the phase when lunar soil would receive its first gift from the Amsterdam tulip trade, perhaps planted inside a plastic biosphere with carbon dioxide on tap. So it wouldn't actually be in the moon's atmosphere. -------------------- death to false dudes

I was thinking that since the earth's atmosphere is so big and the moon orbits the earth, that maybe the moon has some of the earth's atmosphere. Some sites are saying that there is no air on the moon, though. I dont know shit about astronomy though.

Some sites are saying that there is no air on the moon, though. I dont know shit about astronomy though. The Earth's atmosphere is effectively only 100 km thick (~62 miles). The moon is 384 km from Earth... so no, it doesn't share atmosphere with Earth. Any atmosphere the moon has is insignificant when considering things like putting plants up there. -------------------- |

so then is there air or not? I want impala to be wrong just cuz it would be funny. If there is no air, im going to launch a mission to put a jar of air on the moon.
