That basically sums it up. I am sorry folks, but if you are too god damned fucking stupid to figure out how to get a highschool diploma from a public school you should just shoot yourself and be done with it. I mean for fucks sake, all you gotta do is show up to class and you get a diploma, and you don't even really have to do that half the time. It seriously just makes me laugh when people are like "Oh gee! This is a problem!" If they're too dumb to graduate then let them fucking drop out, they can make a nice career outta shining my fucking shoes. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

No, what's it about?
-------------------- A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?

I don't know that you'd be an idiot so much as you'd be lazy.

As much as I'd like to agree with you, you're making a horribly sweeping generalization. I'm sure many kids drop out of HS because they have a family situation such that they need to work full-time. And no, I'm not just talking about the kids who knock up their girlfriends. -------------------- |

QUOTE (Spivey @ Apr 9 2006, 04:26 PM) No, what's it about? it's this economist that dispels and proves certain "myths" about modern culture and explains why things really happen the way they do. the guy uses real facts and numbers from countries like japan and the u.s., and major cities like chicago, to explain his results. this article just reminded me of this chapter about parenting, because one part shows that a parent reading to their young child has absolutely no bearing on whether the kid does well in school; apparently just having books in your home is enough to make a kid succeed over a home that has no books. i guess the city of chicago had some study done (they cite like 20 years of research and interviews and testing) and they were going to spend tax dollars on mailing like 2 books a month to homes with children to test the findings. it's really interesting and an easy read. |

That relationship sounds spurrious to me. I would venture to guess that the true relationship is that more educated parents are more likely to have books in their homes, and that more educated parents are more likely to raise more educated kids. -------------------- Holy shit, pebkac, you're awesome! I would venture to guess that the true relationship is that more educated parents are more likely to have books in their homes, and that more educated parents are more likely to raise more educated kids. well, i don't have the book right in front of me, so any explanation i could give on here doesn't do justice to any specific information in the book. you would seriously have to read it (at least the noted chapter) to get all the details as to what kind of data he was using to form his conclusion. i see what you are saying, though, and it's exactly what is discussed within the chapter. i really didn't get it much merit until i read everything and saw what he was trying to say. the general belief is that more successful (highly educated) parents spend more time with their young children teaching them to read and practicing on a regular basis than a less successful (lesser educated) parent. while this may be true, the children of those surveyed scored no differently based on that variable alone; the differences came in whether or not there were books available in these homes, showing that the actual reading wasn't the factor everyone had thought, the availability was. it gets moderately complicated when it talks about how the school your kids go to makes no difference in the end because you'll learn if you want to learn. there was an example of how in one city neighborhood, there was a limited chance of families getting to send their kids to a "better" school in the suburbs. of the families that applied, there was no difference in performance of the kids who got to atttend the "better" school and the ones who were stuck in the ghetto; it's just there to show that the people who applied, mostly lower-income families, were interested in furthering their education and becomming successful, and the crappy school wasn't going to hold them back. it talks about a lot of other stuff, much more than the 2 things i mentioned here. it's kinda difficult to explain. the book explains everything really well. |

QUOTE (woody @ Apr 10 2006, 12:20 AM) the future of america people Then why are more people graduating from college? I wonder how the HS graduation rate compares to the population as a whole... as in, maybe more people are going to HS in the first place, but not graduating. It wasn't so long ago that it was unusual to even start HS. My maternal grandmother I think only finished 6th grade, something similar with my maternal grandfather. My paternal grandparents were both well-educated, though... I guess that's the difference between people living in Texas (my mom's family) and people living in Massachusetts. -------------------- |
