Reminds me of the Airborne Laser Laboratory that I've heard about some 5 billion times since moving to NM... This is based on tanks/helicopters rather than airplanes, but I bet it works on the same principles.

it looks like the old mechwarrior inner sphere anti missle systems. aka as a high speed machine gun that tracks and shoots down incoming missile fire.

their system is different, couldnt tell how. but it seems to work. i wonder how well it can handle multiple targets.
