Carter ran in the south as a moderate democrat, even though he is/was nowhere near moderate. He didn't win over democrats in the north. Well, Dixiecrats are dead, shouth is pretty republican now. You are right about the south being democrats and voting for him, i think its the last time they went mostly democrat.
