The only practical application for E85. I got my car to run it. Not because it has environmental benefits or help ween us off foreign oil because it doesn't and it won't, but this:
91 octane gasoline ![]() E85 ![]() Who knew that in an attempt to save the environment, they created street legal race fuel. Anyways, the dyno reads a little low, plus 6000ft elevation robs the power. A 2006 Z06 Corvette(505hp says Chevrolet) puts down 406 wheel hosepower on this particular dyno. -------------------- Beers that I have had, updated July 5th, 2009: 1,548

You fed both of these fuels into the same engine with no changes? What vehicle were you using? I know the "flex fuel" vehicles are programmed to run E85 but they run like shit with it (at least, mine did). Though I've also heard that people who do a lot of modifications get awesome hp increases like you mention.
Take a big whiff of it sometime... it's some nasty stuff. |

What kind of car?
Every machine that I've run even %10 Ethanol in was quite obviously not putting out as much power as with normal gasoline ... and that shit doesn't work worth a fuck if your vehicle is carbuerated. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

05 Subaru Impreza WRX. It's got a significant amount of modifications now, but I really only needed a fuel pump, bigger injectors, and a tune. I've got aftermarket engine management, with which I can change the ECU map, depending on which fuel I run. I had a quarter tank of gasoline, it was tuned, then dumped 10 gallons of e85 into it and then the car was tuned again.

I don't see how it could .... even %10 ethanol Colorado fuel fucks up my 13.7:1 head on my carbuerated sled, and it doesn't do my 14:1 EFI sled any favors either, and my pickup truck sure feels weaker with a full tank of %10 .... I don't see how E85 would be better, it's effectivley lowering that ability of your motor to operate at a compression ratio higher than about 8:1 ... I have to mix %20 113 octane race gas with my carb'd sled if I run %10 ethanol fuel in it .... E85 sounds like an ickynightmare to me. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

I guess you need to provide some proof that e10 makes your car slower. You will notice a drop in gas mileage. Where are you at now? Utah? Depending on where, the higher elevation in Colorado may be the cause of your truck feeling slower.
Why does water/methanol injection work for performance applications in cars? It draws heat out of the combustion chamber, effectively raising the octane of the fuel coming in, and mostly eliminating knocking. Ethanol burns at a lower temperature than gasoline also creating a cooling effect. So, you can not only increase the compression(because it won't knock), but also the air fuel ratio making more power. E85 is about 105 octane. It burns more efficiently(quicker) at the proper richer mixtures, which allows you to advance the timing as well. Depend on the automobile, all modern cars can run e10 without any problems due to the vehicle's ECU to change the timing. I don't know if snowmobile's have an ECU, but you will need more fuel due to the lower energy content of ethanol vs gasoline. I thought all fuel was 10% nowadays. or "up to 10%" or whatever. Can't because we aren't growing enough food to convert into ethanol to mix with gasoline. I know for a fact that my truck ran like shit with E85 and it was designed to use it. I went from 20mpg highway to about 15, and there was considerably less power. I think just timing changes aren't really enough to make up for the difference in fuel. Probably just means that "flex fuel" = it can use the stuff, not that it's going to take full advantage of it. I have seen articles where people did their own modifications to their car and got really good results from it.
I have gotten really good results from using 93 octane with a programmer. It has a road gear so it's not like I'm able to boil the tires, but the sucker will do 30-100 in no time. |
