I'm hearing that with the economy tanking, break-ins are on the rise. Might be time to finally invest in a gun. Any suggestions for a first-time gun owner on something to buy?

Get a .357 revolver. Revolvers make excellent first guns. Easy to load, easy to shoot, easy to clean, and very effective (.357s will scare the shit outta anybody who comes in your house and easily wake up the neighbors to make them call the cops). .357s can also shoot .38s which make them fairly reasonable as far as ammo cost at the range. They're also usually a little easier on the recoil than the poly-frame semi-autos a lot of people like.

I own a Smith & Wesson 686P and it's been an excellent gun. I've also heard good things about the Taurus (SP100 or something like that).

I just found out I was getting a bonus from my new company this year even though I only had a month and a half with the company last year. It's pro-rated, but ..

It's still enough to buy a gun.

Do I buy new tires and a steering stabilizer for my 4-wheeler or an AR-15?

a .357 is a decent idea, but there will be some problems with it. for instance, it'll be vital you have good quality defensive rounds. AND YOU CANNOT MISS! a .357 will go through your wall, and through your nieghbors wall, and into your nieghbor if you aren't careful. i'd suggest a smaller caliber. nothing larger than a .40 cal. and nothing with a barrel exceeding 6"

so if you get a .357, keep it loaded at home with hollowpoint .38's for safety, if you aren't as familiar with target aquisition.

the problems that arise with having a revolver over a semi-auto is that no matter what, there will be a round chambered and ready to fire. (some people try to leave a cylinder empty, but this is a dumb idea and results in fumbling with the cylinder to set it properly. if there are no children in the house, or idiots wanting to play with the gun, this is usually fine.

as impala said, a revolver is a nice, simple weapon. however spec, i won't condescend and say you can't figure out a semi-auto. you're a damn engineer after all. heh. it doesn't take a genius to work a firearm, but it will take practice, whatever you decide to get.

a few people may argue the effectiveness of this weapon, but i feel that the taurus 4410 would be excellent, especially if you live in an apartment.

TAURUS 4410 "THE JUDGE"

it is a 5 shot revolver, takes both .45 long colt and 410 shotgun shells load it with the 410 shells, and it'll blow anyone in your house away, but leave your nieghbors relatively safe from over penetration. costs about $450 right now.

COLT DETECTIVE .38 SPECIAL

is an older model gun, but you can usually find them for moderate prices in pawn shops. (less than $400 here in lubbock) is a 6 shot .38 the benifit about these weapons that even if older, and show a little wear, the majority really haven't been fired too often and are very reliable.

H&K USP COMPACT 9MM
costs a bit more, but i've never heard a single complaint about these. however, i've never had the chance to fire one.

as much as i hate ar-15's prolly get one. their resale value is gonna skyrocket soon. the cost of the things has already gone up about 500 bucks, and they are a good hobby toy to personalize and modify.

(your other toys are always breaking, you should stop throwing money into those snowmobiles and 4 wheelers and crap. heh)
