A state can be a republic and not have democratic tendencies. While our system is not direct democracy or the democracy of Athens it is, as Christine said, representative democracy.

You're thinking of the difference between a confederation and a federation

The United States is obviously a republic but so is Iran.

We actually had this debate a while back. We're in a republic, also know as a representative democracy. Definitely not direct democracy, though.

I had this debate with my bf today, mostly about the electoral college and it's usefulness/purpose in modern day America. I see what he is talking about with representing the states, but with the congress representing the states, do we really need the president to do the same?

Actually, my point about representative democracy is that it is NOT a "majority rule" system. Congress looks out for the well-being of their constituents, but they shouldn't be 100% beholden to the whims of the majority in their state/district. Part of the job of representatives is to make judgment calls on when it's best to follow the majority and when it's best to defy them to protect minorities or the common good.

The president's job, imo, is to do that on a broader scale, making decisions with input primarily from his advisers and Congress.

As for the electoral college, I support it WITH modification to proportional allotment of votes, rather than "winner takes all" in a state. Having the electoral college in place is advantageous over the popular vote because it weights votes by state population regardless of the voter turnout in those states. I.e., in this election the popular vote might be skewed towards Arizona and Illinois because the two main presidential candidates are from those states.

Back on this topic ... Look at which states McCain win and which states Obama won.

With the exception of Californado for the most part, McCain won the middle of the country, while obama won the coastal regions.

I can now look forward to the next 8 years of poverty in the rocky mountain region, I can no longer ride my snowmobile or 4-wheeler, and I'll be out of the job I haven't even started yet in 6 months.

I say the "middle" of the country needs to succeed into a "New America" where the fucking liberals are not allowed.
