Atheists... I seriously don't know how a Christian and an atheist can be friends. I mean, the differences are just too vast.

Using similar logic I don't know how an Asian and a black person could be friends... the differences are just too vast!! Although, i'm pretty sure that it says somewhere in the bible that Christians are not supposed to befriend nonbelievers but I could be wrong. (note I did not say witness) Also, i'm Agnostic and I have several Christian friends This post has been edited by The Fanatic: Sep 7 2008, 10:31 PM -------------------- A psychotic world we live in. The true atheists that I have met that study the idea that God does not exist are like "Pfft... hahah. How can you believe something so ridiculous?" Christians who are true Bible studying people are like "Pfft... Well, I sure hope you are right otherwise you'll spend an eternity in hell."
If you don't know that the other person is a Christian/atheist than all is well, but the second you find out either 1) you will compromise your beliefs or 2) your friendship will start to fade. Agnosticism is different than being an atheist. Additionally, I'm talking about people who practice the religion or philosophy, not people who just claim to be of a certain belief. Finally, your analogy is flawed in that you don't chose to be Asian or black. That is out of your control. Presumably, according to what most believe, people can chose whether or not to believe in God. |

I just think it's ridiculous for an atheist to be zealous about his or her lack of belief.
And yes thank you I obviously realize the difference between Atheism and Agnosticism ... just pointing out that differences between them and Christians are still quite marked and that according to your logic christians and agnostics could not befriend one another because of the hell issue. The analogy is not flawed because regardless of the differences be they religious, political, economic, racial, etc. people can overcome those boundaries. In fact, I would rather befriend people that are different then me in one or more ways so that I could gain different perspectives. People can choose their religion but most don't. The whole concept of free will is bullshit because most people are not given any real choices. They are born into a religion and follow that religion. Most in fact choose Jesus as their savior before they are even capable of making an informed decision. Of course, this is not true of every person (I am living proof of this having been born into the Church Of Christ). And if all else fails those friends could just choose not to talk about their differences as impala and zach pointed out. Well, call me closed minded but I know I could never be friends with someone who is openly a mormon or scientologist.

I personally don't find anything wrong with people who don't believe in God. They can believe what they want. Though if I feel a good friend of mine may need to try it out then I might casually invite them to church or something (which I've slacked off on for a while but bleh). It's the ones who spend their time lashing out at religious people and trying desperately to disprove their beliefs that bother me. I just don't really understand the point.

At least Christians have a grounded theological motivation for converting non believers. -------------------- A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Well, call me closed minded but I know I could never be friends with someone who is openly a mormon or scientologist. You're closed minded. I don't know about scientologists, as I've never known one, but one of my better friends in college was mormon. He was an awesome person and perhaps one of the more popular RAs I worked with. Just because your experience with them is some kids on bikes in suits waking you up after some wasted Friday night doesn't mean they're all terrible people. Blue if you're reading this, you remember Larry G. right? |
