Cable interwebs, Time Warner fucking blows. Options

I want my FIOS back.

So my new complex only has Verizon DSL and Time Warner Cable, I chose the latter. I've had it for all of a week, and aside from sucking, it doesn't work. My signal level is just plain out of spec. I'm getting (on average) -12 to - 8 DBmV on the recieving signal, and I'm transmitting at 56-60DBmV on the return path -- WAAAY too high. The problem is, this is coming straight off the wall drop. I've tried all the other drops in my apartment, and I get the same results. No splitters or anything that I can see (or have access to) to fuck up my signal, it's just not there. I've called time warner about the issue, they are sending a tech out saturday, but I was wondering if anyone on here might have some insight into the issue. For example, where the fuck they plan to install the amp, considering that I'm pulling this straight off the line. Could this be a problem with the wiring in the complex? My complex manager said that all the wiring should be fine, it's fairly new wiring, so I'm not sure how they plan on rectifying the situation.

Anyways, time warner blows, cable blows, i want my fucking fiber back.

I get FIOS at my old place literally half a mile away. why not here! >:o

I wonder if I could get my hands on any wiring plans for the complex. Are those things typically on file or some shit? Is the complex in any way obligated to share them with me?

i'm sure the cable guy will help out to get you a good signal. most of em i've dealt with will do a good job if you show them you know about signal levels & have a nice HD setup and stuff.

Iunno, the guy that came to install it seemed like he was rather miffed that i was keeping him from tending to his meth lab... I wasn't impressed.

Are you talking about dBm? Do you know the typical power of those lines? They are going to put the amp where the signal is not to far away from you and not too powerful, cause it would cause it to saturate. I don't know the specs on it, if you get me those and the type of coax i'll give you my best guess.

when he says -12dB it's talking about the total drop from source (usually showed by a setting in the cable STB). the problem with apartments is usually there's not a drop straight from the node to the apartment. usually there's a bunch of splitters in between, each one adding 4-5dB of noise. it's pretty low voltage, but often times the cable STB along with other devices plugged into the TV will make a ground loop and in those cases you can get a weak shock.

dB is relative power based to source. dBm is relative power based on the conventions of power (dBm converts directly to watts).

dmb is a crappy band.
