again chuck, agree to disagree. I feel confident and informed in my position, and you feel instinctual in yours. I'll leave computers to you, and refer to myself to things relating to higher education. Oh please. It's common sense stuff man it doesn't take some kind of specialty to know why a kid drinks in college. If you don't want to debate it then that's fine, but don't insult my intelligence acting like it's over my head somehow. If you do want to debate it and are so confident in your position, then the questions I asked in post #116 should be easy to answer. I understand why so many universities want this implemented, because they're tired of spending all their time & money enforcing it. I'm perfectly fine with that reasoning. But that wont get the feds to change the law, so they come up with this bullshit reasoning with some bullshit stats to go with it. |

chuck, you insult peoples intelligence by assuming that you know all and refuse to even listen to the fact that someone has a differing opinion
reread my posts. When I say "agree to disagree" i respect your opinion to disagree then state my own. it isn't an insult to you but believe it or not, I actually do know what I am talking about sometimes. so call what you want "bullshit" and realize that I'm ok with you disagreeing with me. I would love to see you concede the opportunity that someone may know more than you on a subject a time or two, just so I know that you're not just stirring the pot. |

Yeah, but then you flashed your credentials, Blue. I think this is more of a moral argument which no college degree or work experience can make you any more qualified than someone else in answering.

I would love to see you concede the opportunity that someone may know more than you on a subject a time or two, just so I know that you're not just stirring the pot. I would have been perfectly fine with you saying agree to disagree. But you had to just add that little bit of "you stick to the computer stuff" bullshit. Don't poke at me if you don't want the backlash. I do concede all the time that someone might know something more than I do. Especially on other forums which are specific subjects that I go to to learn about. But we don't discuss many subjects that are black & white knowledge on here. This one sure as hell isn't. It's all opinions. I have mine and you have yours. Your degree and job doesn't make your opinion any more valid in this case. If you want to keep debating it, I'm all for it, you can respond to the reasoning I already gave. If you really want to agree to disagree, that's fine too. Personally I enjoy the debate. Just don't get upset if I'm not convinced (which I'm not easily anyways and you knew this before you posted) ![]() |

eh nevermind. the only point i was ultimately trying to make is that the current system isn't working, and that i support trying this idea. I was just trying to lend credibility to the fact that it is my job to work with these students and to help find better ways to help them succeed in college. and now, sleep. i have 800 of these 18 year old bastards checking in tomorrow morning. Wish me luck. Let's hope this law doesn't pass tomorrow because in that case I am royally fucked. The day the law (if it ever does) changes, that will be a huge day of binge drinking, but I think it would level out and be a better situation.

Yeah, the problem will move away from colleges and into high schools. That sounds so much better. (Sarcasm not directed at you, Blue. Just speaking in general)

Blue, does data exist from college campuses when the legal drinking age was 18?
I like the DNC one about the detention center. http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/pop...16&src=news -------------------- Southern Rock, beer and bears!

Well Blue that does bring up another question... so if this does get passed and it's lowered to 18, are all the schools who currently don't allow alcohol on campus going to change that policy? And the most important question of all, does that mean we can buy beer at the football games!??!??!!

Just speaking in general) The problem already exists in high school. I presume, though, that it's to a lesser extent because of parental oversight. Blue, any research to back up my hypothesis? -------------------- |

Well parental oversight *should* play a role. Whether it actually does or not is another question entirely.
![]() Regardless, with the majority of families, the parents are going to be more aware of what their kid is up to while they're in high school and living at home than they do when they go off to college. Unless they're MY parents, who tried to GROUND me during my 2nd year of college. "You can't leave campus until we say otherwise!" "Uh, I don't really leave campus *anyway*. I don't have a car." "Well... you're still grounded, dammit!" Fucking retards. This post has been edited by Spectatrix: Aug 20 2008, 08:32 AM -------------------- |

Shoot, as an RA I can't tell you how many times I had parents calling the front office trying to find out about their kids or wanting us to follow up on them and see where they went and what they were doing.

got a quick break from move in so i'm checking emails and Techsans.
But a great deal of the research is trying to compare our culture to the UK, France, and other countries where the drinking age is 18. They do see overall less cases of alcohol poisoning, but there are other factors that play into that but are found to be less influential than the fact that historically these 18 year olds have been treated as adults and the majority of them behave as such. as for the high school problem, it has come up a few times, but i never read the referenced articles because I don't think it will be as big of a problem. I think that drug use among teenagers is a bigger problem than alcohol abuse. When i was in school, it was much easier to score dope than alcohol. |
