HOUSTON (Reuters) - A Texas school district will let teachers bring guns to class this fall, the district's superintendent said on Friday, in what experts said appeared to be a first in the United States.

The board of the small rural Harrold Independent School District unanimously approved the plan and parents have not objected, said the district's superintendent, David Thweatt.

School experts backed Thweatt's claim that Harrold, a system of about 110 students 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth, may be the first to let teachers bring guns to the classroom.

Thweatt said it is a matter of safety.

"We have a lock-down situation, we have cameras, but the question we had to answer is, 'What if somebody gets in? What are we going to do?" he said. "It's just common sense."

Teachers who wish to bring guns will have to be certified to carry a concealed handgun in Texas and get crisis training and permission from school officials, he said.

I know some will hate me for saying so, but I think this is a good thing. Fuck gun-free zones!

Agree 100%, as long as they keep consistent with the above mentioned training requirements.

I was under the impression the schools being gun free zones was a state law. If it is, I don't see how a school district can make this decision on their own. Not against it though. Just can't imagine where the teacher would carry it. I guess an ankle holster?

Yeah, but when I think of small pea shooter, protection is not the first thing that comes to mind. I guess there are plenty of places to conceal a weapon on your person. Just seems like it'd be cumbersome but a worthy trade-off. If someone came into my school, my classroom would be the second one they hit. I've certainly thought about it but have resigned myself to the fact that there's nothing I can do if it happens. If I die, then I die and hopefully I will have served my purpose in life by that time.

the size of the gun doesn't dictate the size of the bullet.... my grandfather's derringers were all .45 cal and .357 magnum, or even 410 or 20 gauge shotgun shell....

That's a pretty ignorant statement. You're not shooting a .45 cal bullet out of a .22 cal barrel, but the size of the barrel definitely relates to the size of the gun. Hell, the term "pea shooter" relates to the diameter of the barrel more than anything.

Now, nitpick aside, I understand what you're getting at. You were talking about length of gun when I was talking about girth.

I went with Mike last time he was here. I sucked it up with the pistol as I'd never shot one before (Yeah, I know. "Your dad's a cop, why'd you never shoot a pistol?!"), but did well with the rifle. I should develop a taste in an expensive hobby like shooting.
