yeah I noticed that story while I was looking at the AJ about the damn house directly behind mine being burned down via arson....

Suffice it to say during my 9 years in Lubbock I saw at least 3-4 attempts to make the county wet, none of which succeeded. I'll believe it when I see the goods on the shelf.

$0 adjusted for inflation is still $0.

Look at the scale! Just because it's pretty damn close to the line doesn't mean it's $0, especially way back in the 1920's. Obviously, there's not much adjusting needed for the modern era, but there does seem to be some spikes around early 1920's, early 1930's, early-to-mid 1970's, and 1986-87. The very first spike, which seems to correspond to WWI, is easily representative of several billion dollars.

QUOTE ("http://www.measuringworth.com/")
Current data is only available till 2007. In 2007, $3,000,000,000.00 from 1916 is worth:

$58,461,090,225.56 using the Consumer Price Index
$41,541,358,581.06 using the GDP deflator
$121,641,190,667.74 using the value of consumer bundle *
$218,973,214,285.71 using the unskilled wage *
$281,659,520,947.03 using the nominal GDP per capita
$834,492,974,758.21 using the relative share of GDP

Pick your scale and the numbers of today don't seem nearly as drastic.

I did look at the scale. Look at that 1985 peak, at most that's $10 billion. you think 1985 $10 billion translates to $175 billion 2008?

And by your own post, $3 billion in 1916 = $58 billion in 2008. Still nowhere near $175 billion.

I will agree with you it's dumb to look at something like that without inflation, and whoever created it probably just wanted the "woah" reaction from people like cmac, but still.

For my purposes, I'm going to choose to use the Nominal GDP per Capita value as it proves my point the best laugh.gif
