nobody is saying you can't make money without a degree. you certainly can do much better with one though. it may be hard to see when you're right out of college and only making low 30s, but look at degreed vs non-degreed at age 30. age 40. age 50. short of becoming some kind of district manager, I would imagine retail management tops out around $50k (depending on where you live).

and I'm not saying Jim won't get one, but the chances that you get a degree I'd imagine fall off dramatically the older you get.

Meh, I disagree. My mom got her first Bachelor's degree when she was 40 and her second when she was 43.

Besides, I'm only 22 o.o It's not like I'm old or anything.

I didn't say old people don't get degrees, just that it's less likely. In my six years of college I can probably count the number of students in my classes over 40 (hell, even over 30) on one hand.

I just disagree quite a bit that a degree is essential. It's essential for certain fields, yes, but if you are wanting to do something outside of those fields, then experience is the best tool to have. I mean, look at most of us. We went to school full time for 4ish years and MAYBE worked a part time job to have play money. I know in my case, I took really heavy course loads so I couldn't hold a full-time job, and I paid for school and living expenses with loans. That extra money that people make with a bachelor's degree in fields like sales and management, goes straight to paying their monthly student loan and credit card bills. I just think it's wise to wait until you know what you want and you have some experience in that field before you go wasting money on school. That way, you can weigh the benefits of having the degree vs. not having it. Plus, so many companies offer tuition assistance these days that it's insane.

My husband will have his associate's in August through the army. He is 21. Hell, I had a bachelor's degree when I was 20, yet he makes a lot more than most people his age. When he finishes his associates, all he has to do is work in the military for another year, take an English and a humanities course either by clep or some other means, and he can enter into the PA (physician's assistant) program which is a two year program through the ARMY which gives you both a bachelor's and a master's. That's his plan right now. The Army pays for his school, pays him like he is working, and pays his family's housing costs. Sweet deal really. I don't know if any of you know anything about PA's, but my uncle was one for the Air Force. He made $70,000/year and was promoted to Captain very quickly. He then retired from the miltary and makes well over $100k/year working as a PA in the civilian world. They are in high demand, and they are basically a super glorified registered nurse.

Also, getting a degree has been made so convenient these days that there really isn't that stigma anymore that middle aged people aren't getting degrees. I know so many people in their 30's and 40's that have gotten degrees or are in the process of getting one. Hell, my dad got his bachelor's like 4 years ago, and now he is 4 months away from his master's. The man is 47. Really, because of the abundance of online degree programs, older people are getting degrees all the time. Plus, they have already established themselves in the career they want. Getting a degree for them is just a huge pay increase. My dad had his associates in nursing for YEARS and worked as an RN (something you need a bachelor's to get into these days). He was making at least $30 an hour everywhere he worked right before he decided to go back to school. He then decided to get his bachelor's which gave him at least $38 an hour everwhere he went. Now, when he gets his master's, he will get at least $50 an hour anywhere he goes. You don't see kids right out of college making that much in nursing. They make about $22/hour.

Will EVENTUALLY make more money with a degree, yes. Starting out? not always. That's my point. Get your career started, and then decide what schooling is best for you.

And yeah, the number of people doing school online is INSANE. Trust me on this one. I don't know how to look up figures, but there are sooo many people doing online classes these days, especially older people.

How my mom got her first BS. Second one, she did the accelerated RN degree at Tech. She was a busy lady.

Sounds familiar. I hope you don't still resent the fact that, when we were dating, I wanted to wait until I was done with school before you returned. I did want you to go to school, just didn't think the income situation really allowed for it.

Also, Law School costs are much higher than regular grad school costs :S

Shit, with her loans, we still get about 10k a year for living expenses and that's barely enough to cover bills all together.

Looking at her check stubs for the loans, I lied about the amount. Make it 8k.

I know law school costs more. I also didn't have loans, if you do recall. All my schooling and our living expenses came out of my meager earnings as a research assistant.

Because I was trying to pop the on/off button back in to place on my phone using a push pin, put too much pressure on it, and my hand flew to my other hand and poked a fucking hole right through my finger nail. Hurt like a MOTHERFUCKER

How is that self-inflicted? When i think of a self-inflicted wound, I think of something like cutting yourself on purpose or some shit. Maybe my definition of the term is skewed.
