I going on a road trip in a couple of weeks. I have never gone on a road trip with a friend (only with parents). We're going down south to Mississippi area, do you guys have any advice on what to take with you on the trip, etc?

Stop for snacks before you leave. It's fun.

Make sure you google how to change a tire before you leave and you have a spare and a jack, just in case... since there is a lot of open land in Texas.

Check your tires before you leave. Check the treading and the pressure levels.

Cash... some places in the middle of nowhere still don't accept debit/credit cards. $40 in cash is something to have handy.

Don't ever stop at a rest stop. They are dangerous places. Thieves often hide out there waiting for unsuspecting travelers.

Pillows. Something to get comfy with while the other person drives. Even if you don't want to sleep, it's still a good idea. You can use it to block the sun if it's beating down on you while you are in the passenger seat.

Have your cell phones fully charged.

Take some quarters for a pay phone in case you are out of cell range, and you have an emergency.

That's all I can think of for now. Most of this stuff I don't do myself, but I have had times when I needed the stuff and didn't have it. I used to do quite a few long distance drives.

I hear that they have cleaned it up quite a bit. Still some areas that are needing fixed, but the touristy areas are probably fine again. I just would imagine that there will be less people there. I plan on going to New Orleans when we move to Georgia the end of next month. I-10 goes through there so I figured that would be a neat place to stop, eat dinner, and shack up for the night. I planned on taking I-10 all the way from here (well, I have to drive 20 minutes outside of San Marcos to hit 10) to Jacksonville, FL, then take I-95 (I believe) to Savannah. It's about an hour longer than the way MapQuest suggested, but it's SUPER easier.

I'm driving down from Michigan.

Anyway, we're driving to the Mammoth caves first and then to New Orleans. From there we're probably going the same way as you, Jacksonville and then Savannah. We'll spend sometime in Savannah, and if Savannah is a disappointment, we can go to Charleston.

I found some AWESOME stuff to do when visiting Savannah. Of course, I haven't been there yet, but I research the area a lot since we are moving there. You might want to check out Tybee Island while you are there. It's part of Savannah, but they have really neat sounding restaurants, dolphin boat tours, and other fun beach stuff. Also, I hear the shopping and night life in downtown Savannah is amazing. I know a lot of military people who used to live there, and I haven't heard a single bad thing about the area except that it is really hot. They all say there is a lot to do.

wow, the dolphin tours sound awesome. We're not going to be in Savannah for very long, probably just one day, so I'm not sure how much we can actually do. We'll be staying downtown, so we will get to do lots of downtown Savannah stuff. I kind of want to visit a plantation somewhere too. The big one in Charleston looks really nice, I found one by Savannah too, but they didn't put up any pictures so I don't know. I guess I'll try to convince my boyfriend about the dolphin tours. We may be going on a swamp tour in New Orleans, so I don't know if that would be too many tours...
