Spex, you know of any bank/union with a good apy? Checking or savings? If you're in Austin, for checking I'd recommend United Heritage Credit Union. 6.01% APY as long as you get online statements, do one direct deposit/debit per month, and 10 debit card transactions a month (doesn't matter whether it's processed as debit or credit, but ATM withdrawals don't count). That APY is up to 25k, APY over that is 1.01%. Good customer service overall, I just wish they had a savings account that was as good as this checking account. I've got my savings at Washington Mutual right now. Their online savings account (just have to set it up online and online statements -- otherwise is just like their other savings account) is currently 3.3%, higher even than the online-only banks. My boyfriend and I have both experienced good customer service with them, but they have their horror stories just like every other big bank. When the fed isn't going all screwy with the federal funds rate, eTrade usually has the best savings rate, but I fucking HATE their website and interface. Haven't heard good things about their customer service either, and my own experience was so-so. ING Direct has fantastic customer service, but their rates the past couple of years have been a tad bit lower than other online-only banks. -------------------- |

Next question: does being able to post at length on such subjects as these make me lame?

i don't know why everyone has problems with wells fargo
i'll agree they are way too big for what they are but i've NEVER had an issue with them...i've never been charged, deducted, or scammed... i once overdrew my account back when i was a freshman and they refunded the fee... if you're talking about a savings account with wells fargo most banks have stipulations...you have to have a certain amount in a savings account but a checking account you do not... i just thank god for USAA....they are simply amazing -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. So, I woke up this morning, made a business call only to find out I have to pay $150, so I was a little upset.
Fast forward about 2 hours. I log-in to my BofA account. I'm expecting like $120 in there, but just wanted to make sure nothing else had hit. To my surprise, there is $294.39 in there. I'm like "uhh.... how did I get money?" So, I click on account history, and there is an ATM Error Deposit Credit of $167.53. I'm thinking "CHA CHING!" That solves my problem of the bill from earlier!!!! But then I start thinking, and I know all of my deposits I have made recently have hit my account properly. I always check online after making an ATM deposit. Plus, the last few deposits I have made were in even increments of $20 bills. So, I decide to call and ask because I don't want them audit my account later and pull this money back out. I call, and they say that the last deposit I made on 6/16, I entered the amount as $160 but there was actually $327.53 in the envelope. That's where the difference of $167.53 came up. Ummm... ok? I figure banks audit their books all the time, though, so I might as well come clean. I told the lady that I really don't know why that money is there. She put in a request for them to research the deposit, but didn't put for them to correct it. That way, it could still be free money for us. I should find out in 7 business days. Sure would be nice if I get to keep that money. |

So it looks like we get to keep the money. I just called BofA and they closed the request for account maintanence without drafting the money out. All the documentation says it's ours. If for some reason, they audit down the line and draft that money back out and it overdrafts the account, they will reimburse us the overdraft fees. Yay for free money!

why don't you just use USAA? We want to. My husband just hasn't signed up yet because he doesn't want to bother changing his direct deposit. Heh. He is currently using Fort Bliss Federal Credit Union. My BofA account is like our joint account that we pay bills with, and his account we use for food and fun. It's kinda a pain in the ass every time he has to withdrawl money from his FBFCU account to deposit bill money into my account, but it's a lot less of a pain than dealing with the Army and changing the direct deposit over. His account doesn't have checks so we have to use my account for rent and stuff. I like the BofA account, though, because my mom can deposit money in there if we are ever in an emergency. We are in the process of a lot of changes, like buying furniture, baby stuff, planning a big move, etc so I occassionally borrow money from my mom for a week or two then pay her back. It would be such a pain if all we had was USAA, wouldn't it? I mean, they don't have physical banking sites.
