Very very disturbing. They show the actual footage a few seconds into the video.

I wonder what the race of the old man was... just curious. I mean, maybe he was white and that's why the people standing on the sidewalk didn't help. Doesn't explain the motorcycle driving around him... or the cars just passing by without stopping, but still. Pretty sad that no one did ANYTHING, not even call the police. A police officer on his way to another call saw the man and called into paramedics. That's awful.

I don't think this was a racial thing...

Pretty sure it's a further devolution of the "slow down and gawk at the wreck" mentality.
Those horrid excuses for human beings. mad.gif

You know, there was an accident shortly before I left Lubbock.....I was on my way home from work, and turning right onto 34th street from Indiana, and I saw people gathered around something. I pulled over and there was an old man in the street lying about 7 feet from a pickup truck. They hit the guy....knocked him clear out of his shoes. I went into the back of my car and grabbed my first aid kit and went over there. NO ONE was doing anything....they were just all crowded around for the show. So, I did what I was trained to do....ASSESS and try first aid. Unfortunately the guy died because, well, he was hit by a fucking oversized pickup truck, and folks stood around staring at his gurgling body for like 5-10 minutes before I even got there.

I know shock sets in, and folks become afraid that if they try something they may kill the person....but NOT trying can also kill them. I would rather be alive and injured because someone just TRIED than dead because no one stopped to help.

Blame lawyers. Seriously.

Everyone is so scared that if they offer first aid and something goes wrong and they end up further injuring the person, some asshole lawyer will see it as a way to make a quick buck and file a lawsuit

As long as you don't accept anything after rendering aid (dinner or anything), you're safe from being sued. But most folks don't know that.

I remember as an RA, we were ordered not to help, even if we knew CPR. Was always a heated topic between us and the administrators.

the majority of humans are mindless sheep walking through life half-asleep

sometimes i think all humans just need to die and go extinct, but there's always a small handful that surprise me

Yep, due to the good samaritan laws. That is assuming they don't refused treatment (if unconscious, consent is considered implied). Even if a person didn't feel comfortable administering first aid, though, I don't see why they wouldn't call 911.

I really need to get my first aid/cpr certifications renewed. It's been several years now since I last had a class, though I'd certainly feel comfortable rendering first aid regardless.

in some states you can get sued for NOT rendering aid, and in others you can get sued FOR rendering aid, it's a lose-lose situation, just use your own judgment and do what's right... the legislative and judicial world is fucked

Yeah, if lawyers weren't around people would have helped.... huh.gif blink.gif

People don't help because it'll take time away from thier own day, and no one wants to be inconvienced to have to call the police and possibly have to give a report of what they saw...
