they stopped making us put our hands over our hearts when we said the pledge in elementary school - that was never a "rule". if obama simply doesnt do that and people are literally getting up in arms about it?! Christ, the American people may already be so pussified that there's no hope!

i support and love this country. i do not just roll over and let things go on that i dont believe are fair or just. thinking otherwise is unpatriotic

Critical of one's country isn't unpatriotic, but not putting your hand over your heart for the national anthem or the pledge (I forget which exactly it is that he refuses to do) is certainly unpatriotic in my book.

It was the national anthem. And no, he hasn't "refused" to do so, he just occasionally has not done so... mainly through lack of habit. Am I offended? No... while I'm a little surprised that a politician hasn't made a habit out of it, most Americans (in my experience) don't put their hands over the hearts for the anthem. It's just not as habitual as for the pledge. I recall many a day at summer camps and other events where I was literally the ONLY PERSON out of a hundred+ kids and counselors to do the hand-over-heart thing for the anthem. Nowadays, it's probably about 50/50 for me... personally, I don't hear either the pledge or anthem that often.

I do agree that refusal to put one's hand over heart for the anthem... or refusal to say the pledge of allegiance (both things have been falsely claimed about Obama) would be unpatriotic. But occasionally forgetting to do something for the anthem? No, that's just human.

This maybe slightly off base, but judging someone based on their values is about as shallow as judging someone based on their looks. I'm not sure it has much bearing in the world of politics, at least not politics nowadays. In reality we have no idea what these people's real values are, an in fact if the values they choose to present reflects that of your own, who's to say everyone should have such values. Critical of one's country does not equal lack of patriotism, just as much as unbridled love for one's country does not equal patriotism (more a long the line of nationalism). And frankly, my president does not have to be nice.

I'll agree with being critical is not necessarly unpatriotic, but the values thing I have to disagree with. Someone with values is more likely to keep to what they say they will do, be it good or bad. I really like McCain, because he has been critical of Republicans, way before it was popular. Go back 2001 December, every decmocrat and republican is all for war. Democrats pormised to reduce Iraq when they got the majority of house and senate. All they did was blast the military leaders for being inept. I think that both republicans and democrats are both plugging their ears in and saying we can do it without listening. I was hoping for hillary because she is more middle of the road, and wouldn't mind her as president. Second closest to the middle is McCain. Go Putin if you don't want nice.

I don't know. It's kind of weird that people (liberals, conservatives alike) thinking that their politician is some sort of saint. These are politicians, they have their agendas, and hopefully those agendas reflect the needs and desires of the people (and most of the time they do, depends on which "people" you're talking about). There are strong incentives to get their agendas accomplished, sometimes you bend, sometimes you don't. It's hard to say the value system for any regular person, let alone a politician.

but making people happy that give them money is a big motivation to do whatever it takes to make them happy.
a lot people can be made happy using a presidential label.

I normally know personally all the people that I vote for with the exception of President, in this case I actually worked for the man for 6 months and have had sit down conversations with Michelle and Barack when they come to Texas. So yes, I will actually know the people that will be on this ballot.

Now, I have in the past avoided a race where I couldn't bring myself to vote for a Democrat because I couldn't stand them but also couldn't stand the Republican, so I didn't vote.
