QUOTE (Lancifer @ Mar 29 2006, 09:37 AM)
well, myself and others could program and reproduce the facebook code in less than one month for 10k

the thing that makes facebook worth 750 million to 1 billion dollars is it's huge base of millions of people in the 18-25 age range

this range is the hardest for advertisers to reach, and having a website that millions of people in this age group visit at least once a day is worth 1 billion to advertisers

not to mention that as new kids go to college the facebook base automatically renews itself, it's every advertisers wet dream

you're not thinking about this from a business perspective

1 billion i can understand, 2 billion is ridiculous

yeah but code has nothing to do with it. code never has anything to do with this type of stuff. nobody ever invents some revolutionary new code, it's basically just who comes up w/a catchy name and gets millions to view their site.

What i'm askin is why 1 billion is acceptible and 2 billion is outrageous

1 billion is only 250 million dollars more than 750 million (what one company already offered)

i could see another media company upping their offer by 250 million just to reap all the advertising benefits

what i can't see is a company doubling that and paying 2 billion, the money would be better spent on r&d, making their own site, and advertising it on tv

so you think the first and only offer so far should be the correct offer? if that was true half the shit that gets sold on this forum would go for $5.

and creating your own site and advertising it is stupid, the whole point is the facebook already has however many millions of people looking at it a day. do you think all those crazy people who spent hours and hours on end creating their profiles and uploading pics will want to do it all over again?

To say code is one thing, but to get into the infrastructure necessary to support such an insanely busy domain - that what would probably be rather expensive in itself.

I'm curious how much money the developers are making currently. I thought I heard that the site was created by a small group of people- but who knows how many make up the facebook team by now.

The team is still fairly small, you can read occasional postings about the happenings at Facebook at this guy's site: http://avalonstar.com

He is the visual guy and sometimes has post about different things at Facebook.

I believe I read an article that the infrastructure is similar to Google's philosophy, keep it cheap and continue to expand. Google's server room is a collection of old and new servers and when more power is needed, another server is plugged in. I doubt Facebook has more than 20-25 servers with a few database servers.
