what cmac or whoever it was posting on the last page hasnt realized yet is that the majority of techsans posters have no hope for the future and little faith in their fellow man.

It's pretty hard for me to have any faith for people when they keep electing idiots like Obama into office ...

Cat how the hell can you come in here and accuse everyone else of thinking things are terrible and have no hope for the future? You and all the other liberal treehugger hippies are the ones that think everything is so terrible and that everything needs to change.

the reality? there's nothing going all that bad.

assumption: the media would have us believe there's a recession, and that the economy is tanking.
reality: FALSE. the economy has grown. you can't have a recession and a growth.

assumption: gas prices are terrible
reality: TRUE. but we're still paying for it! all it goes to show is that we had so much disposable income we could afford to pay more for gas. it's not like people are going without bread & water to fill up their tanks.

maybe gas hitting 10 bucks a gallon will be what it takes to get american people and american businesses to do something. i frankly am not all that scared about it. would mean higher demand for alternative sources and products which would lower the prices and make them more available. and id realllllly love two solar panels for my house (but i can already get fed. grants and tax credits to get these!)

Estimated 2007-2008 Inflation Rate

Gasoline and motor oil +36.6%
Utilities +16.6%
Food +10.1%
Health care +8.6%
Housing +6.5%
Education +6.3%
Entertainment +3.1%
Apparel -5.0%

Just incase you think that only gas prices are rising.

It cost me almost $7 to get a single meal from McDonalds today with nothing extra. Inflation is ridiculous right now, Cathryn. Are you living with your parents or something? Because EVERYTHING is going up in price.

It's a sad day when Wendy's costs as much as Cafe Express.

No shit... fast food just isn't affordable anymore. I can go to a sit down restaurant and pay the same amount for a meal.

eh I'm sure this is true in some cases (depending on the restaurant/food you eat/etc), but as a person who eats out for lunch almost every day with coworkers (yeah yeah I know shuttup), this is for the most part not true. the sit down restaurants have gone up as well. we will go to the typical chilis/fridays/local places and just about any sit down place we end up between $12-15 meal+tax+tip. you can knock that down by $2 by getting water, but then that's not a fair comparison to the fast foods. my typical fast food trip is usually around $7-8.

honestly though, although prices are on the rise a little bit, I think a lot of it is just us getting old wink.gif. what did your parents say when you asked em for $10 so you could go to dinner and a movie with your friends when you were 12? "O M G we used to eat out and go to a movie for like $3 back in my day blah blah blah blah blah." I think we're all just getting old enough to start seeing inflation take effect over time. When your child is 12 years old he/she will be saying "mommy can you give me $45 so I can go to dinner and a movie with my friends?"

bullshit

i work 15 miles from home. there is no public transportation to my work. i don't have so much disposable income i can just fill my car up and not worry about it. I pay for it because i have to. if i don't, i'm without any income.

The median income for men now in their 30s, when adjusted for inflation, is 12% lower than what their dads earned three decades earlier, a report by the Economic Mobility Project, an initiative of The Pew Charitable Trusts, concluded.

health insurance soared 74%, in inflation-adjusted dollars, since 1970
the mortgage payment that a median-income family is paying for a three-bedroom, one-bath house jumped 76%.
auto-related expenses jumped 52% because the typical family now owns at least two vehicles

If people would just avoid fast food they'd save money in the long run.

wrong... how bout some data from the official census bureau instead of "economic mobility project" whatever the hell that is.

QUOTE (woody @ May 29 2008, 10:59 AM) *

... I dunno how you could say "soared" in a span of 38 years, but whatever. I guess gas has "soared" like 700% since then too, and milk like 400%... dumb way to word it IMHO. of course inflation over 38 years will be bad. actually 74% increase in insurance doesn't seem that bad in comparison to other goods/services. not to mention medical care is insanely better now in comparison to 1970.

QUOTE (woody @ May 29 2008, 10:59 AM) *

Yeah.. for a 3 BR 1 bath that's like 1700 sq ft now vs barely 1000 back then, 2 car garages instead of .75 car garages, with granite countertops and appliances that (inflation adjusted) would probably cost more than a car in 1970. hell the range of these things is insane nowadays. you can buy a 3br 1bath house in lubbock for $60,000, or buy the exact same size in new york for like $1.5 million.

Impala: household income is higher because more women are in the workforce (more 2-income households). I have read, however, that individual incomes are down, when adjusted for inflation. This was a couple of months ago, so I don't remember the source... just saying.
