QUOTE (impala454 @ May 25 2008, 11:43 PM) *
The heater in your car doesn't suck heat from the engine compartment. Your engine coolant runs through the heater core (basically a radiator) and provides hot air. If your engine is overheating it is for a reason. If you're turning on the heater that means you're leaving the damn engine RUNNING, which is the absolute last thing you should if it is overheating.

Well if you are in the middle of BFE and need to make it, the heater core is cool and provides a quick exchange. If you are leaking, then it will provide a bit more coolent for the engine (they put the inlet/outlet for the heater core high in the reservour for this reason) If your belt broke/pump not working. Then it may do nothing, I used this trick driving my great uncle's 75' monarch back in my senior year of high school driving through the mountains between Stockton and the Bay Area.

if you're in the middle of BFE you need to pull over and shut the engine off and let it cool down.

if its really overheaded you turn over the engine a couple of times after it shuts down, avoid engine lock.

Easier solution: don't buy a POS that will overheat

Well if you shut it down and wait a little bit, you could sieze/crack the engine. The reason is that much cooler water in the radiator (which has a higher coefficient of heat transfer) cools much quicker than the engine. Turning the engine off without waiting for a long time about an hour, could cause the cool water to stress the hot engine. Always remember that life it not a one variable equation.

A one variable equation? Chuck... this isn't some engineering problem in class. It's common sense. If your engine starts to overheat, you shut it off. I can't believe we're even arguing this.

Sorry I'm "immature" and a "fucking idiot" because I think driving an overheating car is stupid.

i take it you aren't very mechanically inclined.

and i think cathryn is the only person saying to "keep driving it"

if you'd learn to comprehend what you're reading you'd know that everyone is is talking about the proper way to SHUT DOWN the car when overheated.

is it too hard for your little brain to understand that sudden changes in temperature will destroy your engine? it's too hot:: duh. lets open the hood, and turn it off. oops, now theres a crack in the block/radiater/waterpump. i wonder how that happened?

do yourself a favor and punch yourself in the dick

keeping the engine running in general when it's overheating is stupid.

I comprehend what they're saying just fine. It doesn't mean it's right. The proper way to shut down a car when overheated is to turn the key backwards and pull it out. If you happen to have a car with an electric water pump then you can leave the ignition on after you shut it off.

lol ok, keep running an overheating engine then! I'm sure it'll cool down if you keep it running. And you called me an idiot?

It's funny that the ones that call me immature, stupid, idiot, etc are the ones that say childish things like this.
