QUOTE
WASHINGTON — Oil executives today challenged lawmakers to open more areas to drilling and send a signal to the world about the United States' resolve to deal with its own energy problems.

"If the nation set a goal of increasing domestic production by 2 (million) to 3 million barrels a day by opening up new sources of exploration and production, we could demonstrate to the world that we are in control of our own destiny," Shell Oil Co. President John Hofmeister told a Senate panel today.

Just last week, President Bush was unsuccessful in persuading Saudi Arabia to crank up its oil output significantly.

Chevron Vice Chairman Peter Robertson argued that the United States can't expect other countries to increase their production "when we limit our development without good reason."

pretty interesting note here:
QUOTE
With the U.S. economy slowing, motorists reacting to higher gas prices and use of ethanol on the rise, the nation's reliance on foreign oil will fall this year for the first time since 1977.

Hofmeister, pointing to government data, noted that imports made up 57.9 percent of U.S. oil consumption during the first quarter, down from 58.2 percent in the same period a year ago.

Now I guess we'll sit back and see if our congress can do what's necessary.

My prediction is that even as U.S. consumption falls, price will continue to rise, proving that the correlation of "U.S. consumption causes the world's woes" is false.

I think India and China have some impact but they still are not a huge consumer of oil and their growth has not been a spike in the overall trend.

I very much think the price of oil has to do with traders protecting their stake and making sure that they have supplies in case something catastrophic occurs.

I'd also say the US is printing out way to much money to fund Iraq.

The Green River Formation contains the largest oil shale deposits in the world. The 213 billion tons of oil shale contain an estimated 2.38 x 1011m3 (1.5 trillion US barrels) of shale oil.[2]

I basically live right in the middle of it.

There are various portions of the "Green River" formation that are 6-9,000 feet underground ... It's not all a lake of fossils like I think he's meaning.

Well, I mean, I guess there could be fossilized remains 7,000 feet underground, but how you gonna get those out, a strip mine? heh smile.gif
