It is my right as an American citizen to smoke. Cigarettes are legal and I'm over the age of 18.

You can't smoke in public in San Francisco. You can't smoke in private business establishments either. And now, they're trying to make it illegal to smoke in private, adjoined residences (which as the OP stated is "practically" every home in SF)

So if I can't smoke in my own home, and I can't smoke in public, and I can't smoke in any building, where specifically can I smoke?

If I can legally smoke, and the government makes it illegal to smoke anywhere in the city, then yeah, my rights are being taken away.

Your analogy is off by a mile

A better analogy would making it illegal to drive on streets (even though it's legal to own and drive a car). It effectively limits and eliminates 90% of where you can drive....which is what this law is trying to do - eliminate 90% of where you're allowed to smoke in SF

of course... the usual cost of a full auto extends WELL beyond the means of an every day citizen.... usually above $10,000. and then the licensing, and the background check... eliminates 90% of who could own them....

i beg to differ. having your license revoked and suspended is about half the business i see everyday.

Hate smoking and being around those that do. Have no problems with public smoking bans, but I don't see how the government can declare that you can't smoke in your own home after you've been living there for years. They'll probably need a grandfather clause of some sort that allows those currently living in such homes to keep smoking but anyone buying/renting new homes will have to abide by the ordinance.

I never said it was unconstitutional/illegal. I'm in full agreement that the Constitution allows a state or city to outlaw the sale of cigarettes if it wants. It's completely legal. My beef is that I just plain disagree that we need that law.

I almost feel like the city is going to surprise us one of these days and say that they're bringing back Prohibition because there are people out there putting lives in danger by driving drunk. They have good intentions but end up going slightly overboard every time.

Dude so the night I posted this, I woke up at 4:00am to the smell of smoke. It was thick. It was like someone had been smoking in my room all night. My roommate sometimes brings his shitty friends over at weird hours and on occasion they smoke. They didn't ventilate it very well this time, I guess. I thought I was going to barf, but I only had a couple hours before I had to get up for work so I decided to tough it out and just try to sleep through it.

So later I get up, get ready for work, and go out to the kitchen to make my lunch before I go, and there's this random old lady puffing away at a cig at my kitchen table. I have no idea who this person is. She's all like, "Oh, hi!" like she knows me or something. I was so pissed all day long because of that. So fucking inconsiderate. I get my shit smelling like smoke because my fucktard roommate treats our apartment like it's a Days Inn. I see random people crashed in our living room a lot, but dude, the smoking thing sent me over the edge.

And to think I was up the night before bitching about that cunt's smoking rights. The god of irony/karma strikes again.

friends excuse all the time was that it didn't smell all that bad and "i COULD just not shower, would that be better?"

damn capslock and lazyness. i don't care about a smokers health, hell, if it wouldn't make drugs run rampant for awhile hat would disrupt my daily life, i'd say let them be legal. if you wanna kill yourself slowly or quickly, fine by me, is your choice, i just don't wanna have to spend the rest of the day smelling like ass and ashtray because i stood next to you on the elevator (and yes smokers, simply standing next to someone who smokes will make your clothes smell of it too.)

I think smokers that only smoke outside don't smell as bad. I think Woody remembers that guy Travis is the dorms. He smelled horrible.
