QUOTE Hayden said the world's population is expected to grow by 45 percent to 9 billion people by midcentury, mostly in countries that cannot sustain such growth, such as Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Combine that with the likely mass migration to developed countries, and resources will be strained, leading to an increased risk of violence, civil unrest or extremism, he said. I think that should be the sole purpose of humanity right now - The Space Program. If we focused on that we'd develop all the technology we want and need ... recycling, alternative energy, etc .... Sooner or later, we have to find a new planet, or the species will die ... It's pretty much a fact. I dunno, I wish NASA had facilities engineers could work at in the rockies, maybe if I truly thought I wa doing something that would ultimatley benefit humanity, that would ACTUALLY benefit humanity at the coremost level we need it as opposed to a bunch of hippie tree hugger ideals, i'd be a more chipper person. I dunno....I just read this article and it made me think about what a crock this election is going to be ... we _HAVE_ to have a space program. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

I dunno about already having an underground base on mars, but I agree w/Lance for the most part. Whatever we see on the surface as far as military/space goes has proven in the past to be decades old. I'd love to see whatever they got under wraps at the moment.

I'd like to see space exploration in the U.S. moved to the private sector with top-secret stuff still controlled by the military. Just personal preference.

well i think the only reason there hasn't been more private sector space exploration is because there's no money in it yet. putting up satellites and stuff sure, but going to the moon or something requires way more money than some private sector would want to put in, for not a lot of return.

I think its a lot cheaper just working with aid and social service organizations to deal with social problems - overpopulation is one of them
ive also heard that countries like india have thought about starting programs limiting births like the Chinese have had for years i also think thats a way more feasible idea than creating a home base in mars within the next 20 years -------------------- Little monkeys making money

since you are so well versed in the subject - what technology eliminates poverty? an out there space program? (im sure people in poverty will be able to get those jobs if thats what you are thinking...) and how has that worked out in real life versus social services and economic counseling?
ill help you out a bit - it doesnt -------------------- Little monkeys making money

Why? Why is it my obligation to help someone else because they're having a rough time? And how do we tell the "totally lazy and useless" from those that arent?

uh because its called not being a selfish half head. its part of humanity to want to and try to help others. its this countries backbone and is a value americans like to say they have. and because people generally expect empathy and aid when they are in need. but that doesnt just happen unless there are people out there willing to help.
hope you never get into an automobile accident and depend on a passerby that will give you aid or you experience a housefire and lose everything you own that insurance wont cover -------------------- Little monkeys making money

There's a difference between being a good samaritan and handing money over to someone just because they're down on their luck.
