I think facebook is just TOO stuffed full of CRAP. Those damn apps drive me nuts...I have resorted to just ignoring all of the notifications cus it's just droves and droves of stupid shit.

Then think of it in the business sense. Facebook wants people to use the site as much as possible to pull in ad revenue. So now someone can see that you're on and send you a text message. That alone could keep the person at the site for an extra 30 seconds. Hell could be 30 minutes. Multiply that by a giant number of users and that's a lot of ad revenue.

My thinking was that chat on websites went out the door four years ago... I guess I was wrong.

Ad revenue is not generated by "hits" anymore, it's generated by leads, people actually clicking the links.

Facebook is slowly turning into MySpace, minus the viruses. Guess I'll be deleting that account as well.

Yeah I can't stand the "applications" crap. I will still use facebook because I like the layout, and the fact that people can't put seizure inducing colors and patterns as their backgrounds. I just wish you could turn off all applications and application notifications.

as far as chat on websites, I find myself using the gmail one a fair amount. I'll get on to check my email, and one of my buddies (who can't use aim at work) will be on, and will chat for a min.

My point was that chat inside of Gmail makes sense, as it was originally a standalone application and Gmail is a communication tool. So if you're going to send someone an e-mail and you see them online, you just send them a message on the chat tool. It makes sense.

In that regard I can see the chat tool in Facebook being useful, instead of sending someone a message, you send them a chat message. But other than that, it's a bloat feature without a lot of value-add (IMO)
