I guess it just depends on the school/prof... I mean if your homework is given to you and supposed to be done only by you with no help, then sharing with and getting ideas and answers from others would be cheating. It just so happens if you're doing it on facebook rather than the library, you're way easier to catch. I remember having profs on both sides of this fence.

i guess i'm just used to having professors actually set up facebook groups for the very reason of class discussion.
it seems though that if they allow the students to talk freely in a 'study hall' type area then facebook would be fair game. -------------------- Don't sweat the petty, pet the sweaty.

Fucking retarded. I wouldn't even classify that as cheating. It was more of tutoring. I never went to tutoring in college, but I had some friends who did. Their tutors would use real hw examples to show them how to do it. What's the difference?

Well it's really up the professor in how they want their homework completed. I'm just speculating, but I'd be willing to bet this facebook group had complete answers + work shown and such.

but there was a stats prof in the BA, you could buy previous tests/homework from a former student for like $100 and it had the solutions & all the work -------------------- |

What impala says is true. I have had several professors in the past who have orally stipulated that students were to receive NO help, consultation, discussion, etc from other students but were supposed to work on their homework assignments independently. However, I think that this strategy of "teaching" is completely useless. As long as a student is not directly copying homework who is to say that he/she is still nor learning? I am of the school of thought that not only do students gain knowledge from the professor but students can gain knowledge from each other and even the professor can gain knowledge from the students. If there is anything that I can't stand it is professors who think they are some sort of academic gods because they have DR in front of their name. Don't get me wrong, these men and women worked very hard to get where they are and have a wealth of valuable information and experience, but I think the kind of teaching style that led to the accusations of cheating in this article are pretentious. With that said, the student should not be charged with cheating but should fail the homework assignments given his conduct in relation to the oral/written instructions. So while I disagree with the ultimate decision and the teaching style I do think that the student should receive some sort of disciplinary action because of his conduct but he should not be expelled.

why should this one student be singled out just because he's the admin of the group?

very good point cmac, every student who engaged in the facebook discussion who was in that class must be punished or no one.
