I remember some mac fiend telling me how its a RISC based processor along time ago, and blah blah blah. I was really hoping For Sextits or something! the 386 could have been considered a "RISC" processor back then ... heh .. The motorola chips of the 90's used something like 5 times as much memory to perform the same instructions as the intel chips did .. I'm not sure what happened when they switched over to the PPC chips (weren't those IBM?) as I really stopped caring at that point ... -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

OH SNAP!!!!!!! YOU ARE THE FIRST POLITICAL RPG'ER TO GET HIT WITH THE "USE EMOTIONAL LOGIC IN AN INTERNET POLITICAL ARGUMENT AND LOSE - Cuddle with Cathryn until you eat Tofu and barf it up -10 modifier to charisma!" PENALTY!!!!!!!! haha but seriously, what has protesting seriously accomplished? I want to see what a direct result of fat bitches with their shirts off, trust fund babies griping about how horrible the same system that is propping them up is, etc .. The protests in Tienneman Square accomplished nothing, etc... If protests worked, we wouldn't have terrorism would we? Seriously, I don't see where it's accomplished much ... It's accomplished plenty. See: civil rights as the BIGGEST example (which you seem to off and on ignore). Seriously. -------------------- |

Definitely true. Now what else? Vietnam War. The protests DID have an affect on this war, regardless of Dogmeat believes. They helped bring to light growing public oppostion to the conflict, something politicians were unknowingly or knowingly blind to. (Same could be said for some of the Anti-Iraq protests) To Dogmeat and Impala: You both see protesting as ineffective. What is the alternative method(s) of political action that you would both suggest? -------------------- |

Definitely true. Now what else? some people could say that homosexuals pushing for equal rights is the same as the 60's civil rights movement. -------------------- Southern Rock, beer and bears!

Starbucks coffee is horrible. I drink my coffee black and theirs always tastes bitter and burnt to me (shrugs).
-------------------- A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?

impala, dogmeat, what zach is trying to say is that protesting done right and effectively is a very good means to show the higher powers they need to rethink something.
zach, what i think impala and dogmeat are trying to say is that protesting done like it is normally done, with a bunch of dumbasses who know nothing about the basis of the protest in question showing up to make a scene and play hacky-sack is by and large completely ineffective like communism, protesting looks really good on paper. put into practice, it's usually only half-assed, at best -------------------- |

QUOTE ('Psykopath') What is the alternative method(s) of political action that you would both suggest? IMHO protesting is less effective than writing in or calling your representatives. The problem is, people want instant personal gratification. They want to be in the limelight so they can say it was specifically them who made the difference. That just doesn't happen in our system of government. Twenty people protesting outside a senator's office isn't going to change his decision about some legislation. If you look at the two successful protesting examples in this thread, they involved millions of people over a pretty good span of time. But IMHO what made those successful isn't the fact that they protested, but the fact that they had very large numbers. |

It's accomplished plenty. See: civil rights as the BIGGEST example (which you seem to off and on ignore). Seriously. I conceded several posts above that events such as the Million Man March got Washington's attention. This is the only example that has been provided hence far. I've stated that I think protesting in and of itself (as I stated exactly above) was largley ineffective and stupid. So again I ask, how does a bunch of idiot college kids and fat bitches with their shirts off griping about shit they've been scared into beleiving solve any kind of political problem? -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

Fine
A few years back, a bunch of spics held protests at local high schools over the planned border closing. Many were arrested and given truancy tickets for walking out of school. The subsequent protests defending the kids (or, as I like to call them, criminals) who were arrested were so large and disruptive that the county dropped the truancy charges. So yeah, protesting works. Rarely, but sometimes -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

Protesting is a means of action when other avenues (writing, calling your representative for example) have been ignored or pushed aside. It provides a more public display of grievances in order to draw attention to certain issues in the hopes of, yes, more swift action.
Yes, a lot of protesting that goes on is by a bunch of dimwit pot smoking losers that probably consider it a social hangout moreso than supporting whatever cause it is about. Protesting is an institution of a democratic system that I support 100%. Whether it is effective all the time or not, simply being able to protest any injustice is a great freedom that should not be shunned. -------------------- |

Protesting is a means of action when other avenues (writing, calling your representative for example) have been ignored or pushed aside. Totally agreed, but how many protesters out there do you think really wrote their congressman? The problem is someone finds ten other people who think the way they do, and think they're going to make some difference by staging a protest. It's all about the numbers IMHO. They way to truly change something and make a difference is to organize and have enough numbers to either influence your representatives or get the ones you want in office elected (i.e. ACLU, NRA, NAACP, etc) |
