I guess I don't understand this.
Ever since I was old enough to remember I've continually heard about the evil Fidel Castro. Apparently we have a Naval Base in Cuba, etc, and all I've ever heard is about how oppressed Cuba is. Why the hell didn't we over-throw this guy like 40 years ago? He's right in our back yard pretty much. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

hah we "tried".
Chomsky gives good reasons on why it is good to have an "enemy" nearby (plays into fear tactics and a good versus bad mentality, conduit for military buildup (more so in the 60's/70's), etc...) I think it's funny that people in Florida have been celebrating his stepping down like it's a big deal and it actually means something. I think the bigger deal is our embargo on Cuba which hurts the majority of the citizens anyways (especially the poor and middle class). When that ends, it will be a time to celebrate (which isn't anytime soon as the US has indicated). -------------------- ![]() |

Let me explain a little more of the Chomsky idea.
We (the US) has never been hesitant in replacing unfavorable military leaders around the globe (with greater emphasis on Central and South America). In that essence it seems kind of odd that we haven't done the same in Cuba (successfully might I add, we have indeed tried plenty of times whether directly by killing him or indirectly by causing social unrest which overturns him). However, in some of the text that I read of Chomsky says that it makes sense to have some enemies nearby (especially during the time of the cold war) in order we could propagate fear and allow a more publicity acceptable amount of spending for the military. After the cold war and actually more appropriately recent times, Cuba has really been an inconsequential element that has been put on the backburner of political discussion (I mean Iraq/Iran dominates, Cuba is really only mentioned when candidates are debating in Florida) and so I think we have this sort of ennui associated with changing the country, so we are stuck upholding a policy of long ago that might not be applicable nowadays. -------------------- ![]() |

We should never trade with communist Cuba. They would become all powerful, invade the United States, and kill millions of Americans. I think that is pretty obvious.
