I doubt your PC & MacBook have specs anywhere near similiar enough to compare.

OK, then it runs Windows faster than my notebook at work which has specs similar to my Macbook.

My macbook....runs Windows.....faster....than my Windows laptop at work....they both are near the same speed (MB: 2.2 Ghz Work: 2.0 Ghz), and my work laptop has more RAM (MB: 2 GB, Work: 3 GB). Both running Windows XP Professional, and I am running Windows on my MacBook with VMWare Fusion.
The programs take about 4 seconds longer on my work computer to load. Comprendes? |

The hardware part is irrelevant though. They're all the same guts inside now. If your macbook runs windows faster than your work laptop runs windows, it's got nothing to do with OSX.

Running the OSs side by side on the same machine. Run some common apps in the same test, etc. Apple is just another PC manufacturer now, that puts a different OS onto the same hardware. The laptop may be 3/4" thick instead of 1", but it's all the same components performance wise.

Youre not getting it, impala. My Macbook is running TWO OS's AT THE SAME TIME faster than my work (Windows-based) runs ONE OS.

Youre not getting it, impala. My Macbook is running TWO OS's AT THE SAME TIME faster than my work (Windows-based) runs ONE OS. If you think the OS is faster based on comparing a work laptop to your home laptop, I suppose that's your prerogative, but in my work experience, I've never had a work PC run as well as my home PC. And that's comparing a windows box to a windows box. Hell my laptop at home, which has about half as much memory runs faster than my work PC. Work computers tend to have extra crap on them, monitoring software, extra antivirus stuff, lots of extra services you might not have at home, etc. The hardware in apples & PCs are identical now. The only thing that's different about apple computers anymore is the look and the price. MacBook Pro 15.4" Display 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2-4 GB DDR2 800MHz FSB Dell XPS laptop 15.4" Display 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 3-4 GB DDR2 800MHz FSB If you take and put Windows on one and OSX on the other, do you really think you're going to see some dramatic performance increase with OSX? You think you're going to rip a CD or DVD faster? Browse the internet faster? Copy some files faster? I got absolutely no beef with people who buy something for looks. The part that irks me is when those people start to claim these things are better performing/easier to use/etc because its pretty and they spent more money. It reminds me of those guys who put 4" exhaust tips, massive wings, and huge tachs on their honda civic and then think they drive a race car. |

The hardware in apples & PCs are identical now. The only thing that's different about apple computers anymore is the look and the price. They're not totally identical. Apple uses EFI instead of a BIOS. As far as the exact differences between those systems or if they even make any difference performance-wise I don't know. For the most part, impala's right. I would argue that the speed increase your seeing on your macbook is either a placebo or simply the result of you not using windows as much (or both). -------------------- Holy shit, pebkac, you're awesome! Just to add as well, I'm not saying Windows is faster. I'm sure some of you might take what I said as saying that.

Entirely possible...but I've pared down the crap on my work computer as much as possible. The IT guy here is clueless, so I have free reign to do with the computer as I please.
And the argument that I don't run Windows as much on the Mac is kinda moot....I boot up Windows pretty much once the computer is up and running so I dont have to wait around to start up Fusion and then boot up Windows when I wanna use a program. Well, one of the arguments against Macs is that they're more expensive, and like that guy said...when you build a PC to be about the same as some of the Macs, it ends up being about the same. I bought my Mac because I was just plain tired of Windows and wanted something different. I found that I liked the Mac a lot more. But, I also feel that Impala just hates for people to be satisfied with something...he has to knock people down all the time. it's what he does most (not best, because he's not always very good at it). Opinions and assholes....everyone's got one. **BTW< I installed SP3 for XP last night.....took 15 minutes on the Macbook, 45 minutes on my personal PC, and about 35 minutes on my work laptop. While I will agree Macs may not be flawless....I am definitely more satisfied with my Mac than I ever was with any of the several PCs I have owned. |

Well, one of the arguments against Macs is that they're more expensive, and like that guy said...when you build a PC to be about the same as some of the Macs, it ends up being about the same. Completely and totally 100% wrong. We have gone through this every time apple vs PC has come up, with numerous complete price listings. I'm not going to bother listing it for the umpteenth time. I bought my Mac because I was just plain tired of Windows and wanted something different. I found that I liked the Mac a lot more. That is wonderful and I have zero problem with people who say this But, I also feel that Impala just hates for people to be satisfied with something... No I don't hate someone for being satisfied with something. What bothers me is when people knock the thing I'm satisfied with, and try to tell me that what they do is superior to what I do. Why Apple users feel the need to try to tell Windows users how much Windows sucks is beyond me. Even the company itself is notorius for this. See post #220 above. he has to knock people down all the time. I wasn't aware I was knocking anyone down, unless you feel knocked down. If that's the case it's your own damn fault. it's what he does most (not best, because he's not always very good at it). Opinions and assholes....everyone's got one. Great, so in the same paragraph you accuse me of belligerent intentions, you do just that. Oh the irony. **BTW< I installed SP3 for XP last night.....took 15 minutes on the Macbook, 45 minutes on my personal PC, and about 35 minutes on my work laptop. And I'm sure all those have the exact same hardware specs and were hooked up to the same internet connection, have all the other same software on it, etc. While I will agree Macs may not be flawless....I am definitely more satisfied with my Mac than I ever was with any of the several PCs I have owned. Again, that's great. It doesn't mean they're faster. With the three computers you discussed, that may be true. The point is, the hardware available with macs is EXACTLY the same as what's available for PCs. Do you understand this? OSX, styling, and price are the only things that separate Apple computers from PCs now. If we can all agree on that this conversation is over. |
