My problem was that, while the login keychain entry was there and fine, the system keychain entry wasn't being created. I can create most of it manually, but there's a 32-digit hex code in the "Where" field that gets generated and I have no idea what it's based off of.

I determined the exact problem from looking at console messages, but the outward problem was that my laptop wouldn't re-connect to known networks upon waking from sleep.

It is when there aren't bugs.

Honestly, overall I don't like it a whole lot better or worse than Windows. It has its pros and cons.

Pros:
Installation of programs is a snap (uses disk images, basically) and removal is clean and easy. No worries about scrubbing the registry because some stupid program (or the OS itself) left crap behind.

For now, at least, I don't have to worry about spyware or viruses to any great extent. Kinda nice not having a folder chock full of programs like HijackThis, Spybot S&D, AVG, etc.

Unix-based, so a linux-savvy person like myself can pop onto the terminal and do WAY more shit than you can in the crippled version of DOS you get in "command prompt".

Native multiple virtual desktop support.

It's very easy to find the system messages + errors in the console (this is how I discovered the exact problem with my network). I'm there's similar in Windows somewhere, but for the life of me, I don't know where. And I've been using Windows since 3.1, so... *shrugs*

Adium > Trillian. laugh.gif Yes, I know it's just an IM program, but the little things count!

Transmission (bittorrent client) has a nice, clean interface and has a smaller footprint than programs I've used on Windows (mainly BitComet & uTorrent).

Neutral:
I can get Mac versions of Firefox, Eclipse, and other programs that I used on Windows.

Cons:
The aforementioned wireless network/keychain bug. FRUSTRATING. Worked beautifully, then broke on the boyfriend's network, then broke on my network. Now it works on my network again and I'm BACKING THAT SHIT UP. Ok, rant over.

Keyboard weirdness. Very rarely, my keyboard will act up. Either not responding at all or it'll act like I'm pressing the option key when I'm not... stuff like that.

Sometimes doesn't wake up from sleep properly. Usually I just have to close the lid and open it again, though.

Had trouble finding a good personal finance program. I finally found one that I like, though it does have some quirks, but it was a long and frustrating process to try them out. Quicken for Mac SUCKS. Then again, I tried a trial of a newer version of MS Money and not only did it suck, it wiped out my old version and made my files incompatible with my old version (thankfully it had autosave backups).

Unfortunately, this is part of life as a Mac user. Things aren't as bad as they used to be, but there are still way too many people who make the mac version of their software as an afterthought.

I dunno if anyone knows the answer to this....

But I got Roxio Toast for my MacBook, but when I was installing it, it asked me if I wanted to install an extension that would allow my optical drive to read Blu-Ray discs.....does this really work????

I don't think that's possible. I would assume you would have to already have a Blu-Ray drive in your computer to begin with for that to be possible.

I dunno...maybe I read it wrong....I should have taken a screenshot of it.

If anyone else wants Toast for their Mac, I can give it to them and they can see for themselves!

It's not possible for a conventional optical drive to read blu-ray discs. Unless this software also somehow replaces the laser inside it wink.gif

Yeah, I misread it....i guess it's in preparation for Apple to offer Blu-Ray drives in their computers.

You can put a Blu Ray drive on a Mac Pro already...

Just not any other mac.
