The Saint Valentine who is celebrated on 14 February remains in the Catholic Church's official list of saints (the Roman Martyrology), but, in view of the scarcity of information about him, his commemoration was removed from the Roman Catholic calendar of saints for universal liturgical veneration, when this was revised in 1969, but it is included in local calendars of places such as Balzan and Malta, where relics of the saint are claimed to be found. there are some religious histories about a basis for valentines day
"plus those holidays are about being together" and valentines is about being together with a loved one well by some peoples arguments christmas has gotten so commercial so why celebrate it. just visit family any day you want -------------------- Little monkeys making money

Well, I'm not Catholic and don't really subscribe to the idea of saints so that logically connection doesn't work for me. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

then how about your statement "plus those holidays are about being together" referring to thanksgiving and such. valentines day intention was about being together too
im just wondering what the basis for its unimportance is coming from for reals. just because candy is expensive? and the argument "well i make her feel special all the time" doesnt work! you could stuff her full of turkey all the time and by your own statements that wouldnt make it thanksgiving or equally as meaningful but just like ANY holiday, like christmas for example. if you have two people who dont care about it then its a nonissue. but the relevance and importance of the holiday itself isnt diminished -------------------- Little monkeys making money

For Thanksgiving and Christmas I have time off to visit family that I rarely get to see. I don't see any reference to "being together" with regards to the original 11 Valentine's Days. I believe it was not until Chaucer's time that Love and Saint Valentine were brought together. Thanksgiving to me isn't about turkey, it's about being with family that I rarely get to see. If Thanksgiving was just about turkey then yes, you'd be absolutely correct. Can you explain why it is so important to celebrate Valentine's Day? You are making it sound like everyone is in the wrong for not doing what others do simply because they don't value it. What's the value you to you? Do you expect something or someone to be with you on Valentine's Day? Do you have an expectation that you'll be treated well? -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

I don't see anything wrong w/valentines day... but it does have the unintentional effect of reminding those of us that are single that we are single this. But it's a good thing. I like being selfish with my time. -------------------- |

i dont know any women that make a fuss about valentines day. but what would that be? demanding a $500 present? is asking to see your significant other too much to ask? my boyfriend is flying to lubbock for a long weekend but its mostly because we like to be around each other and its been a month since we've gotten to do so. candy will be exchanged because its CANDY and we are going out to dinner. i think people that are so opposed to valentines are because their love advances have been spurned hardcore in the past or they cant tap into their cute side and share that emotion with someone else! because sometimes if you do make a big deal out of valentines day its waaaaay worth it for both people ::wink:: SAYS THE GIRL WHO EATS FLOWERS..... -------------------- |

if you do something uber special on v-day i dont know anyone who wouldnt agree to whatever freaky sex act was asked of them. unless your partner is like a dead fish in bed then id suggest getting change. thats another reason why v-day is awesome. a day and night solely dedicated to getting it on! lol... i dunno, i can be pretty freaky..... but just so we're picking sides here, i agree with cathryn. v-day is something to look forward to, not to dread -------------------- |

there is on e part of v-day that i do hate, and it's the hypocrisy of the situation, that blue was hinting at. i will spend about $150 total for a romantic night to make the girl i am with feel special, and usually in return the female will do what? put out?
i'm not attacking people, or even referencing myself in this situation, but on valentines day, the guy gets the short end of the stick most the time. women see it as a "yay! i get pampered" day, and don't reciprocate. i wouldn't mind recieving flowers, or other such things. the girl just needs to make and effort for ME too. see, duane and i have a good relationship because he understands the value of the reach-around. -------------------- |
