Why should I tolerate people wanting me to call them African Americans when they've never set foot in Africa? Or politicians/leaders/forms that are ok with calling me by my skin color but not black people?

You wanna separate people by skin color? Fine. white, black, brown, yellow, etc.
You wanna separate people by nationality? Fine. american, mexican, canadian, nigerian, french, etc.

I wasn't aware that continent-country was a nationality. Hi I'm a European-American, even though I've never been to Europe. Or how about I move over to Nigeria. I'll call myself a North American-Nigerian. Oh or how about South Africa? That'd be cool, I'll call myself a North American-South African!

The correct way to refer to someone of an African-American background using the Associated Press style is "black" unless "African-American" is used in a quote
