and of course there will always b the small number of kids that go to college from these areas. i am just stating that them being encouraged to go with psat, sat,, act notices blah blah blah is not common. the ratio definitely shows it too. look at how many kids go to college from the various school districts. and the number of military recruiters in the ghettos. it's like predatory lenders. they are everywhere.

You can't even find a job let alone a good job with a BS in shit like psychology and sociology these days.

Hell government agencies won't even hire people to hand out wellfare checks anymore without a master's in most of those disciplines.

I've pretty well come to the conclusion it's basically the same thing with engineering degrees in this day and age. The type of job I would have done 20 years ago with a BSME has been completley replaced by computer software that does it all for you.

If I ever wanna have a "real" engineering job I'm definatley gonna have to go back and get a master's or a PhD .... I would if I could afford it right now

Wow. I firmly believe that this statement is insane. There is no way someone born without a father present in the streets of Compton has the same opportunity as a son/daughter of a CEO of a multi-billion dollar corporation. Yet alone racist, sexist, etc... sentiments that are still pervasive today...

whats with the argument that only educated people making over a certain amount of money should have kids? there are a few examples of people here on techsans that say they are doing alright and i fear for their possible future children! education and money are far from what makes good and stable parents.

and i like all these people theorizing like they know what they are talking about or will actually ever work to change the situation. (with the exception of melanie, jessica, pebkac, and stephen because they have hands on experience or are in relationships with people who do)

and you actually can get very good jobs with just a BS/BA in psychology. im contemplating not going to grad school right away because i have a job opportunity that im not sure if i can pass up.

My boyfriend went to TAMS too (same years as me), but he's not on the boards.

yeah, I went to private school. What the hell does that have to do with anything? I still grew up in a rough area. No offense, but other than San Antonio being trashy and ugly, its not much worse than El Paso... it just has more people (only 500,000 more according to the links below...but El Paso has a lot more border jumpers than SA does). If you don't believe me... look here:

Look at the percentage below poverty level and the percentage with bachelors degree or higher. El Paso is far worse than San Antonio in both areas.
Im not saying I had it bad, because I didn't. I grew up in a loving home, and my mom worked her ass off to send me to a private school (because I was white... which if you know anything about El Paso you know there is a lot of racial tension there... ESPECIALLY between the blacks and mexicans). But I can almost guarantee that we *BOTH YOU AND ME* grew up with a pretty good upbringing compared to others. You can't put yourself in the situation of some of these other kids. I worked in a school with 85% of the kids at the school having at least one parent incarcerated. Breakfast was served every day because otherwise the kids wouldnt eat. I worked with the 5 year olds. They would come to school with beat marks. They would come to school crying because the cops showed up at their house the night before to take a parent away. That's hardship. It doesn't matter if you are from the projects. It doesn't matter what school you went to. It matters what kind of home you grew up in. If the parents love their kids enough to push them to be a model citizen, then the kids will most likely grow up to want to do that.

Ok, I will agree to that, BUT coming from someone who has actually worked in low-income school districs, there are teachers there that do a whole lot for those kids. The teacher I worked with in particular had kindergarten kids reading, learning the Presidents of the U.S., learning the states, learning how to predict weather changes. It was ridiculous what she was teaching these kids...kids who were lucky to have 1 parent. All Im saying is you talk down the quality of education for low-income students, but our whole education system is flawed. I've met rich daddy girls in college who are less intelligent than those kids I taught.

And I'm just going by what the U.S. census page says. El Paso has about a million people, but that site says we only have like 600k or something... And the point of that wasnt to show population size, but rather socio-economic status of the two cities because you seem to think you're from the worst place in Texas or something. San Antonio is absolute trash. I wouldn't live there if someone put a gun to my head, but it's not because of the socio-economic status. Its because your city doesnt care about keeping it clean. Its ugly as shit there.
