Lubbock police arrest three Tech players after burglary of residence

Texas Tech football players Rashad Hunt, Dimitri Lott and Julius Howard were arrested early Friday in connection with a Lubbock residential burglary, police said.

Lubbock Police Lt. Scott Hudgens, reading from a report, said officers were called to the 5400 block of Jarvis Avenue shortly before 3 a.m. Friday. Two 20-year-old males, one identified as living at the location, went from the garage into the residence, the report said, and saw two other men leaving through the front door. The resident then noticed electronic equipment missing.

"The suspects drove away in a car,'' Hudgens said, quoting the report. "Officers located the car and stopped it at 1701 Indiana, where they located the suspects and the items.''

Among the missing items listed in a police incident report are a laptop computer and an iPod.

Lott, an offensive lineman from Sugar Land Marshall, and Howard, a linebacker from Irving Nimitz, are Tech freshmen who are being redshirted by the football team this season. Hunt, a redshirt freshman defensive end from Lufkin, is academically ineligible to play this season but can participate in workouts.

All three came to Tech as scholarship athletes; Lott and Howard in 2006 and Hunt in 2005.

Tech coach Mike Leach said he wasn't aware of the allegation until Monday.

"We're investigating right now, trying to get to the bottom of it,'' Leach said. "What we're going to do specifically, we don't know right now. Have to find out the details.''

Tech players were off on Monday. When the Raiders resume workouts today, Leach said he thinks he will allow Howard to practice but not Lott and Hunt. Asked what differentiated Howard's status from the other two, Leach said: "It would be, based on the facts that we know right now, he didn't have a significant role in any of this.''

Leach said he had not dismissed or suspended any of the players.

"I'm in the middle of it,'' he said. "The first I heard about it was (Monday afternoon), and we wait until a guy's guilty. But if we're certain somebody's guilty, we may act sooner.''
