So my car broke down and I'm pretty sure it's going to be pretty damn expensive to fix. I'm thinking of buying a motorcycle because they should be cheaper and easier to maintain. Am I right in thinking this?

Also, what should I be looking at for a cheap motorcycle?

Motorcycles can actually cost a little more to maintain. Motorcycle shops typically charge a higher rate and you usually have to buy parts from the $tealership. I would recommend getting something that is less than 10 years old and fuel injected if possible. Old carburetors get gummed up during the off season and can be a real pain in the ass to work on.

As far as insurance, mine is less than $30/month and can be much cheaper if you have the balls to drop Personal Injury Protection. You will get 40+ MPG on almost any bike, so you will save alot of money in gas, especially if you used to drive a big truck or something. The only other thing to think about is how cold it gets in Lubbock (if you're there). You probably only get 6-7 months of decent riding weather there, maybe a little more if you have good gear. You definitely won't want to be driving your cycle during the ice/snow, etc...
